Will the 9600xt give me good framerates on this system?


  AMD Athlon XP 3200
Shuttle "AN35N-Ultra" nForce2
 Corsair Value Select 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200

I'm nearing final stages to buying my computer, so i want to make sure I'm not wasting my money.

Given the issues with textures and video RAM... you might want to pay a few $ more for the 256MB version.

I don't know which would be better for you:

9600XT 256MB at $155

5900XT 128MB at $172

5700Ultra 128MB at $180

9800Pro 128MB at $193

You can tell which option I went with from my sig, but I think I would have been just as happy with  any of those other cards because my system is too slow to harness the full power of any of those cards. If you are trying to save money, the 9600XT is the obvious choice, but the 5900 and 9800 are so much more capable in terms of pipelines and memory bandwidth...

I wouldn't use an ATI if you gave it to me. If you going to spend the money spend it on something that others are having great results with.

Too many are having problems with ATI cards. For that reason I wont bother messing with them.

Also I just stick with what has always worked best for me. Geforce based cards have never given me a single problem.

I don't know. I still think it's user error. I've always used ATI and had great results. Alot of the people having issues are not troubleshooting their problems thoroughly. I've used both cards and think ATI colors look better so I'm sticking with them. go figure.

Having prob's with ATI cards in the real gaming world? or AH2?

Nvidia's cards are not any better or worse than ATI's for the gaming world.

Jay,  If I were you I would ditch the 3200 for the 2800, the speed difference between the two is marginal at best. Take the diff, approx $70 and get the 9800Pro instead. Now you have more than enough CPU power and plenty of vid power to run any game at very high resolutions. {except this one, until they fix it}
One of my rigs I have the Epox 8RDA3+ MB, XP2800, 512MB and a 128MB 9800Pro vid card. I played any game on the planet and AH1 @ 1600x1200 at over 100fps.

I do believe that the RAM in the 256 card is slower then in the 128 card. Which btw, works great for me
