Need info from those with High end systems in AH2
« on: July 15, 2004, 11:03:45 AM »
I currently considering upgrading and would appreciate any advice..

My current rig:

AMD Xp2000 running @ 1596mhz  (12 x 133 bus.)

1 gig pc133 Dimm (old single data rate ram.. ehh.......)

Radeon 9600 pro.. (non overclocked but using optimized settings for proformance)

In the air above 3000 feet on full screen im getting above 50+ frames per sec..

during a mass attack taking off from a large base im getting a paltry 18-20 frames a sec..  Lots of cons 18-25 frames..  and have to switch to medium or short range view mode in order to be playable... on a large base few cons in the sky im getting 27-30 frames on the runway..

Im Considering upgrading to the following..

XP 2400 (most likely overclocked to 14-15 x 140-166mhz..  Total est mhz 2100mhz and thats low balling it.. $73 boxed...

Coolmaster Jet7 $ 31.00

500 mhz right off the back increase in cpu.. (from 1600 approx)

New motherboard

Either KT400a or Nforce.. (the kt is Asus the nforce at comparable price is Biostar.. not a fan of biostar but would consider it.. if I want Big brand Nforce im paying double of that of the KT400a..)

asus $73  Biostar 49$ (great price for nforce but its freaking biostar.. ugh)

Brandname Nforce $ 100-150 ...

DDR ram cas 2..  512mb @ 130-150
cas 2.5 $ 100

Now between the Cpu and Ram upgrade not to mention the higher Bus I should see a pretty good increase in proformance because as of current i dont feel i have enough cpu/memory horsepower to push the 9600pro with 1600mhz and pc133 SDR  currently pushing her..

Question for the big system dogs..

What type of frames are you getting under similiar situations as i described above..

Are you still getting bogged down in the large fights.. with top of the line gear exp(9800 pro xp3000 + cpu...)

Or is the AH2 the problem... Ive heard rumors of this and problems with ATI cards is this confrimed or just rumors.. (skuzzy you seen lots of test rigs i bet in the AH 2 developement process any imput?)

any advice you got would be appreciated..

thanks in advance

SAVE YOUR MONEY FOR NOW IS WHAT ANY DECENT PERSON WITH HALF A BRAIN WOULD TELL YOU TO DO!
Unless you want to upgrade to play other games that actually take advantage of good hardware.

I would think long and hard about spending money on upgrades for THIS game. If you plan on playing IL2, Lomac, OFP, Farcry or other high end games then yes get the hardware, you won't be disappointed.

I have a similar rig, but can't you fit  DDR Ram? It would make a big difference. If your board accepts a XP2000 it should take at least 2100 DDR.

If you insist on  upgrading now and are going to buy a new mobo anyway, why not an Nforce2 and a 2500+ for just a few dollars more?  Another point to consider since you plan to overclock.  The Nforce boards (at least by Asus) lock the PCI and AGP bus freqs allowing safer and more stable FSB increases.

Now is precisely the wrong time to be upgrading unless your expenditure is going to be minimal.  There are two major market shifts going on: 64 bit and PCI Express. Both are expected to mature by the end of the year - 64 bit Windows XP and cards galore respectively. And SLI is back!

And mine overclocks to 3.2 without any trouble at all -- didn't even have to bump voltage (YMMV!!!). Used cheap but good copper cooler (kingwin) for about $12.

Be sure to get X2 PC 3200 DDRs to go with it to take advantage of the dual channel memory mode.

True, but if ya got the money you can do it on the cheap an wait for a year or two for the huge premiums to come down on the new technologies. I did my upgrade a few months ago for about $250 or so.

Yep I read that about SLi the other day on http://www.firingsquad.com. I hope its a huge improvement on past way that 3Dfx did it and it should be.

Thanks everyone for your time and advice..

I think Im going with the Nforce and a xp2400 with one of those superblowers (jet7) on it.. (I know bad time to upgrade but I always catch the end of the upgrade cycle spending like under $400 which lasts about 2-3 years on the current hardware cycle..) (yeah i could drop 500-700 for a XP64 but 64 bit is still at least 1-2 years before full adoption..  and by that time the XP64 chips will be obsolete.... IMO

BTW charon or anyone else..  how does the rig run in say ah2 when the whole other 2 armies are trying to take your island... Destroyed hangars, smoke and divebombing lancasters{joke}

hows your frames when you take off in that enviroment.. i get about 20 upping to above 40 above 2-3k on full vis..

Ive been using the medium and short vis to get by....

Again, thanks in advance...

Like poop,  IMO,  no game with this level of graphics should ever, ever run this poorly. Period!

Is it true that people with the top end systems are also experiencing video lag, like us little folks?  If so, that would indicate the problem is a limitation on the network or the server, and not at our end.
