i hover around the 300's,400's and by the end of the month sometimes 500's for my overall score and im content with these, it just amazes me when im in a dogfight with a good pilot and you know when he's good! and either you get him or he gets you ill check his score to learn more about him and ill see a 1 for overall and if i got him it makes me feel like i shot down an ace or if he got me i feel like i went up against the best and died ohh well right, i need to get better!

Overall rank means nothing when it comes to skills in a fighter.

The only things I am concerned with when looking at a  players rank is, well, nothing at all. Its pretty cute when I hear someone congratulate another player on being ranked #.... It makes others around, New players, think thats all that really matters in the game, rather than being a better stick in a fighter.

If these people think rank will get them through a fight, be it 1v1 1v2 1v3 ect, they are greatly mistaken.

Its been said 1000 and 1 times before in the past, but I will say it again.

If you look at some of the best sticks in the game, their over all rank sucks. And sometimes even their fighter rank sucks along with everything else. But if you meet them in the air, they will ruin your pereption of just how important/good a top ranked player is.
If you don't receive Jesus Christ, you don't receive the gift of righteousness.

I'm sick of this rank crap.  If the best sticks in the game decided to go for rank every camp they'd run away w/ the whole thing and it wouldn't even be funny.  Some of the best decide to do it from time to time, but my experience is that the best sticks enjoy the challenge of fighting the hard fight against superior odds winging w/ their buddies and slinging it out to the end to try to have as much fun and make as much a difference in the air as they can.  When you hang it out on the line like that, it's hard to get a GREAT rank (noticed I said great, cause through their skill they'll still have a decent one) cause yer most likely gonna get popped a couple more times than you would like and you're not gonna build up the uber-stats some achieve.  Sure, they could buzz around the back of the furball and cherrypick 10+ kills quickly every sortie, but the majority do not.  What challenge, or what fun, would that be?  If that's yer idea of fun, or "skill," then maybe I just don't get it...

Rank vs Skill
« Reply #63 on: July 18, 2004, 06:54:03 PM »
We had a long thread on this.  The point I was getting at in that thread was inline with what Stangs initial comments.  The rank system only accounts for players that are trying for rank, or do all the things needed for a good rank.  If the most skilled players always tried for a good rank, they would easlily rise to the top.
The difference between the mediocre pilot with a low rank and the hot stick with the high rank, is the mediocre pilot is playing Aces High as defined by scoring, and the hot stick is not.

The system would still accuratly provide a measure of golf skill. But your players are no longer playing golf they are now playing a different game. And since your players are not interested in their golf score, they wouldn't even keep track.

So are you interested in playing golf, or do you just want to head to the driving range. Both are perfectly acceptible, but don't try tell the golfers they should forget about it and just go to the driving range instead, because in your view distance is the only TRUE method for messuring a golfers talents.

And since when did playing the game as designed become "gaming the game"?

As far as accumulating points=good rank, look again.  Point accumulation is only 1/5th of your score.  "Death isnt a real issue"?   Lets see kills per death thats 1/5th.  Kills per sortie, if you die before you get many kills thats another 1/5th.  Kills per time,  if you die alot you have to be spending more time in transit, thats another 1/5th.  Points, with the death multiplier you only get 25% points for killed, crashed, or discoed, another 1/5th.  That makes 4/5th of your score affected by deaths.

Well, it is kind of like swans in Denmark: they are all white, but that does not mean that all white birds are swans.
(Swans representing good pilots and "White" representing high ranking)

Hope this clears things out
