190A5 vs SpitV climb
« on: July 16, 2004, 11:21:19 AM »
Being intrigued about the new fastinating SpitV climb performance I did some tests with both planes.

To my surprise 190A5 best climb speed is set to 159 IAS while SpitV is 170 IAS. So, current SpitV-wonder will not only outclimb 190A5 at any alt, but also will easily catch it in any substained climb starting at any alt. On the other hand, big brother 190A8 has a best climb speed of 169 IAS.

My current data may be wrong, but both 190s should have a best climb speed around 180 IAS (175mph military, 182mph wep) and Merlin 45 SpitV about 160, quite different from the current AH2 numbers.

I think the 190A5 outclimbs the SpitV.

If the 190A-5 sets its climb to sustain 325mph the Spitfire Mk V will not be able to climb with it.

Thus it is a distortion to claim that the Spitfire Mk V will outlimb the 190A-5 at any speed.

It is true that the Spitfire Mk V at +16lbs boost does climb very well, but I recall the Fw190A-5 as being the better climber.

As usualy, excelent conclusion. Perhaps A5 will reach 400 fpm at that speed, after waiting for several minutes to reach it ...

From my facsimile copy of the Spitfire V pilot's manual, the best climb speed under 10k feet IS 170 knots indicated airspeed. Don't know about the 190A.

From the 190's pilot handbook:

Best climb speed is 180 mph.

GODO,

Pyro knows the 190A5 is off and is going to take a look at the 190 Flight Model and re-do it.  I think they are just busy with all the other stuff going on.  My 190 manuals are with a pilot and engineer friend of who is German.  He is checking my translations and I will have the manuals back early next week.

190A5, A8 and D9 seem off in best climb speed. But these are not the only ones.

From the F4UDOA comparison report between F4U1D/F6F/FM2 and A6M5, 120mph was found as the best climb speed for A6M5, AH2 uses 146mph. On the other hand, AH2 F4U1D and F6F5 seems to match almost exactly their real best climb speeds of 155mph and 150mph respectively. But AH2 FM2 best climb speed is 150mph, and the same document shows 138mph as best climb speed for FM2, so that one may be off also.

Best climb speed is a critical and touchy factor for every plane.

Yes it is, check out the La-5 thread.  AH seems to be WAY off in the La5 climb performance.
