My computer is emitting an odd "scratch" sound.

Not from the HD or anything.... but from the speakers.

Every ten minutes or so... "scratch scratch".... then silent.

What process is at work here?

Something on a 10 minute cycle is sending out RF waves. If not a cell, thn a cordless, an atomic clock or your nieghbors solar-powered tinfoil chapeau.

It doesn't sound like static or anything associated with any interference or loose connection.

The sound is distinct and consistent... a sound file.

I'm wondering what's triggering it.

Copy, it is not an interfence thing, you have something playing. Run your CPU usage tool and see if it shows it, then check processes.

I checked my processes running and it's basically "a-ton-of-crap-i-dunno-what.exe"

THERE IT GOES AGAIN!

Right. Ignore all the WTFKW.exe, except for the one that runs at that interval. Enable logging, and pinpoint it. Then go to msconfig, locate it and turn it off. Along with all the other crap you probably have in there.

It could be a grounding problem,

Have you changed
how everything that is pluged into the wall resently?

also check to see if you have the water pump,, fridge on the same cercut , It could almost be anything electrical, if the power is surgeing, I see similar things in A/V equipment

lol, nash, that's the most honest description of checking what's running that I've ever heard.

When the volume is on and I am between programs, I occasionally get some indistinct sounds on my computer. Some sound like various parts of the computer running.

Since many computer routine sounds via speakers are distracting instead of helpful, I turn the volume OFF until I'm running a program where I want sound.

With the sound off, I'm more alert to any potential mechancial problems without speaker hiss or crackle.
