Sound Blaster Live! 5.1
« on: July 19, 2004, 07:39:08 AM »
I've now set up everything on my new system, except for the sound card.

I have a Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 and the system wont recognize the hardware.  Ive done troubleshooting and searched the web but either im overlooking it, or I cant find it, but from what ive seen there is nothing working.

The sound card is installed properly, and I have the Sound Blaster CD, but for some reason the PC cant find the hardware for the card.

What can I do?  Thanks in advance for any help!

I have the same soundcard, but didnt have a prob with the
system finding the drivers.  You may want to get the latest
drivers at http://www.creativelabs.com.   Check on your video
card for the ID number..creative labs will let you know where
to find this.  once you have the ID number, you can find out which
driver goes with your card.  Then run the setup and im sure
your system will find it then.  Another try is to put the soundcard
into another PCI slot.  Crazy as it sounds, sometimes soundcards
have trouble setting up certain pci slots.   Ive been told that
the best slot for sound cards is the furthest one away from your
AGP slot.  Hope this helps.

When I try to install the driver, it still comes up with the same message that says something to the effect of "You do not have a Soundblaster Live 5.1 card".  I know I do because Im looking at it in the case as I type this message.  I completely reinstalled windows and still it wont recognize the card.  Im now utterly confused and getting frustrated.

Is there any way I can get the integrated sound card working so I can use it until I can get someone in here to look at it? (I know absolutely nothing about computers)

When I reinstalled windows, I was trying to clean the Hard Drive.  But I think I did that wrong, and now I cant find a CD that says it restores the PC to factory settings.  Ive got 5 CDs that came with it:

Cyberlink PowerDVD for the DVD player
Color Monitor User Documentation
Roxio Easy CD creator CD
Windows XP reinstallation CD with service pack 1a.
Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 software CD.

On the soundblaster CD it says to refer to the users guide for installation instructions.  Theres nothing in the users guide that mentions anything about Sound Blaster.

I think I may have found the problem, didnt use the Drivers and Utilities CD.  ima check that real quick.

Did you try another pci slot?  For some reason the computer
isnt finding your card.  I had a problem like yours before and
switching pci slots solved the problem.

Take the live! card out of your machine.  Set it in a circle of fire and sacrifice a virgin sheep to it.  Don't get a sheep from JOC...he'll SAY she's a virgin, but....

In all reality, if you've got onboard sound, take the SB card out.  When you boot up the machine, go into the BIOS.  There will be an option to enable/disable the onboard sound.  Enable it.  Save the configuration and exit.  The machine will reboot and XP will find the new hardware.  Chances are it will install a driver set, too.

Heh, great!  Ya..some PCI slots use the same addressing as
other hardware devices, so moving to another slot resolves
addressing conflicts.
