I remember having read about the use of radar to measure the speed of airplanes in the 40's (for the F4U if me memory don't fail)
can someone point me to an example ?

IIRC I've heard about radar measurements too, can't remember where. It's not very accurate method for TAS measurements due to wind specially at high altitude but for ground speed measurements it's ok.
