Killing someone
« on: July 20, 2004, 04:16:01 AM »
Long story short, there was someone bragging about killing an Iraqi.  A Marine.  My bs meter was going off, but I gave him the benefit of the doubt.

My question is: Is killing someone a traumatic event for most people?  Do some 'normal' people have no trouble speaking of the event?

Note:  He is a remf, Network Admin (in the Marines).

Taking another life isn't something most people are proud of.  You can be proud of the "event" due to it's consequences, such as wiping out a machine gun post to allow troops to pass safely.  The personal act of killing a soldier is usually hard to stomach, though.  It's a life.

Having no trouble speaking about the event doesn't always mean anything, though.  It's how you FEEL about the event.

Everyone reacts differently in their own way, and you might not be able to tell how a guy feels by the way he acts unless you're trainined to do so. I met a fellow over there who was depressed that he was the only troop in his team who didn't get a kill during the combat phase. I heard some of his guys ribbing him about it and laughing about how "the fat guy moved his head so you missed HA HA" or something like that. How any of them really feel is something only they know.

As for the remf part, normally this would throw a few BS points into his story, but in Iraq it's entirely possible. The war didn't really begin until it was over (as predicted), and there aren't any front lines for the remfs to be behind. Everyone gets shot at sooner or later, so yeah, it coulda happened they way he says it did.

What would you expect those kids to say, Staga?

I guess you don't have to be psychic to predict certain posts in certain threads.

Enemy combatants. I'd cheer too if they were shooting at my guys moments before.

Although I don't support that war at all, I wouldn't give too much weight to what those young guys are saying only minutes after a firefight, with adrenaline still rushing in their blood.

Justified or not, they'll prolly have to deal later with the moral implications of the shooting of a wounded enemy. Some may brush it aside while others may have to carry this weight for the rest of their life.

Not exactly, because there was a follow up segment on him after he came home. he was pretty distraught over the whole event.

If it were your sister martlet, maybe it was a bad edit, afterall...

Yes exactly.  How about posting a link to that follow up segment?

Taking a life is easy, its the dealing with it later in life thats a b1tch.

As far as Marines talking smack after a fire fight that is what they are trained to do.  What makes the grass grow??

Assuming that wounded Iraqi was returning fire, I'd probably cheer as well if I was in that situation. "He is dead, I am not".

I can't imagine not wanting the death of an enemy who was shooting at me moments before. War sucks.
