You get a real TiVo (not a knockoff generic "DVR") with DirecTV. And you can only get NFL Sunday Ticket on DirecTV. I think there are other features in Dish's favor but those are the only ones I care about.

The main thing is A.B.C.

No extra subscription with the Dish PVR like there is with Tivo.

Now Eagler,...don't make me tell my sad tale about cable (by the way, they still have not fixed the cable yet for our block..3 years and counting).

The DiSH PVR is as good, if not better, than TiVO.

While 4 PVR's sound neat, you would only be able to use all 4, on different channels, if you have 2 dual LNB dishes.

PPV can be ordered over the PVR (if you connect a phone line), WEB site, or by a phone call. All are instantaneous. They do suggest ordering PPV about an hour before the even starts, but for movies, you get 24 hours to watch it, so you can catch them anytime.
We usually order the PPV, then set the PVR to record during the early morning hours so we can still PVR our favorites.

I really cannot remember the last time we watched something live.

Sorry rpm... I went for it. Mainly I did it cause cable is running $90 for similar service around here. I'm saving $30 a month and as Martha would say... That's a good thing.

Well, I dunno, still happy with Comcast cable for TV and computer high speed access.

Got a big fancy ad for Dish the other day, but with comparable goodies, it looks as pricey as cable.

Comcast cable provides On Demand for either recording what you want or selecting past programs to view when you want.

Enjoy it most for watching WHAT I want WHEN I want to watch it. No longer slave to scheduling or commercials.

Still waiting for HDTV cable upgrade. We have digital cable now and HDTV promised within the next year.

I had Directv for about 4 years but finally got tired of losing signal when it's humid out the over billing.

The thing that really pissed me off was when my system started acting funny they told me it had a virus and I had to replace the whole thing.

They said if I had their warranty it wouldn't cost me anything. I asked them how it was my fault since the virus had to come from THEIR satelite.

They couldn't answer that but said I still needed to buy a new system. So I did....Dish Network. I've been with them a year and have not lost a signal yet NOR have I had any billing problems.

HDTV is available from DiSH and I beleive DirectTV as well. However, the programming is still a bit lacking.

You have to use a local antennae for local stations if you want HDTV from any local affiliates right now.

I've had DirecTV for over three years and I love it. Haven't lost picture more than twice in that timeframe, even in blizzards I've had good reception.

I would tell my cable company to go shreck themselves, but they are my only good broadband choice right now.

ABC "Anything but cable" Hehe, love that phrase.

That review is circa 2001, doh.
I have heard quite a few people dissing PVR vs TiVo. But I have no firsthand knowledge of the PVR, so who knows.

I have this great digital phone service. It's wireless and it even lets me use my phone as a modem when I travel. It's called Sprint PCS.

Look at the date of that review, Funkypants. I had the PVR 501 when I still had DiSH Network, and it was the very first PVR they ever offered. The review is dead on about that unit, but I would imagine the later models got more features. But it sounds like TIVO has a lot of cool little features that may make the cost of a subscription worth it.
