Piers Anthony's "Bio of a Space Tyrant" series was quite a bit different from his Xanth series and most of his other stuff. Might be a bit harsh for a movie(s) but I enjoyed reading 'em.

Robert Silverberg's "Lord Valentine's Castle" is worthy.

Yup I remember this one, it was in Burning Chrome right?

I loved the novella Johnny Menmonic....not the POS movie with Keanu 'Neo' Reeves.

HG Wells,
Jules Verne
and Arthur C. Clarke
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

Jules Vern by a long shot. A man way ahead of his time.

Interestingly enough... if you ask Dan Simmons what the roots of SciFi are, he points to Homer.

Here's the deal, I think Ringworld is actually pretty boring.  I used to think it was the cat's pajamas, but it turned out I was really more fascinated with the concept of the Ringworld itself then I was about the story.  Louis Wu & Friends on a road trip...  it's ok.

Here's the Niven stuff I'd really like to see on the big screen:
1. The Mote in God's Eye
2. Footfall
3. Lucifer's Hammer

Notice a trend?  These are all books he co-wrote w/ Jerry Pournelle.  With few exceptions both Pournelle and Niven have serious flaws when writing alone.  But when they write as a team, wonderful things happen.

Imagine the USS Archangel Michael at the end of Footfall, now THAT would be an astonishing bit of film.  I can replay that battle in my head at will, years after reading the book.  Or the Lenin in Mote engaging the Macarthur after its...  'capture', and trying to pump enough energy into the shields to get a breakthrough.  Or Harry Red on his Harley ride across the broken remains of the USA after the comet impact, hooking up w/ what's left of civilization.

These are film moments for sure.

(PS, there are a couple of Niven books that might be good alone, but not many: Protector is one, Man/Kzin stuff might be another)

Ah, well, only read the first two of those. They were different enough that I didn't see the continuity or at least after so long now I don't remember it. May have to read the third one of these days, any good or will it be too dated?

Mmm it will be a bit dated I'm afraid.

Gscholz I'll go see those movies, but I don't expect them to be 1/10th as rich as the books are...

Anyone mention Philip José Farmer's Riverworld? Seems there is something being done on this: http://www.scifi.com/onair/scifipictures/riverworld/

Seems to be in the past, missed it.
