One of the best tales in Fred Saberhagen's "Berserker" series is a short story called "Wings Out of Shadow."

The story is about an inter-stellar "aircraft-carrier" escorting a convoy of refugee ships through Berserker controlled space.  In an effort to compensate for the faster reaction times of enemy berserker pilots, the earth-men on this carrier are experimenting with a new system allowing their pilots to fight while asleep, since the unconscious brain isn't bound by conventional laws of physics.

The ship is briefly captured by the berserkers.  The sole survivor eventually devises a way to defeat them...but I ain't gonna tell ya what it is.  Read it for yourself.

Ah yes, enjoyed both the Berserker and Dragon Riders series. Rick Cook had a pretty good series, free download from here: http://www.baen.com/library/

I remember liking the Null-A series by A.E. Van Vogt though I can't  recall if I read them all.

"Ender's Game"

I wonder if they could make an adult movie staring so many children though.

Sure they could.  Lord of the Flies was an adult movie with kids in it.
