The San Marino Police Department took Mary Andrea Mitchel's claims extremely seriously, said Deputy District Attorney Shelly Torrealba. The 39 threatening letters, which prosecutors say she claimed were sent by students, began arriving in March 2003 and continued through November.

In that time, Mitchel was given escorts and surveillance. Police also called upon the FBI, the South Pasadena Police Department and U.S. Postal Service investigators to assist in the investigation. At one point, officers were searching all mail that arrived at San Marino High School to screen out threatening letters addressed to Mitchel.

The San Marino Police Department expended 780 man- hours on the investigation worth about $33,000, which it will seek to recoup.

Mitchel was also charged with threatening the high school's resource officer, an employee of the San Marino Police Department. Mitchel and the officer, Jim Henson, were involved in an affair, said defense attorney Michael Mayock.

"She was attempting to extricate herself from a situation she couldn't put up with,' Mayock said. "That was a cry for help.'

Torrealba said Mitchel has admitted to investigators that she wrote the letters to get attention. Mary Andrea Mitchel, 41, could face more than 30 years in prison if convicted on all 123 charges, though her attorney said he would argue for probation or community service.

And so instead of just quitting she made all this up including falsely accusing several students. I'd be pretty sore if I was one of the students investigated.

You've heard of Beverly Hills? San Marino is where the owners of Beverly Hills live.
