"Angus,
Finland had no D.520 but MS.406s.

gripen"

Sorry, got them mixed.
Was close though.

Do you have more info on the Ms 406?
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

Hi Blixen,

>says its a d520 any got info on it what country?

Eric Brown in "Testing for Combat" commented on the D.520.

Features:

- RPM automatically regulated by throttle
- 1 20 mm engine cannon, 4 7.5 mm wing machine guns

Advantages:

- Good performance
- Climb rate comparable to or better than Me 109E

Disadvantages:

- Automatic RPM control leads to overspeeding in dives
- Engine cuts out under negative G
- Poor yaw stability on power changes or turbulence -> poor gunnery platform
- Elevator trim gets stuck at high diving speeds
- Abrupt stall with virtually no warning
- Difficult spin recovery
- Poor rudder effectiveness before touchdown
- Tendency for ground loops due to wide landing gear
- Speed inferior to Me 109E

Regards,

Henning (HoHun)

WWIIOL has Dewoitine D.520 modelled; Not the best plane down low but with little alt it's quite similar with Bf109E and I even gave a 109F hard times with it before that 109 dived away :)

I remember in "The Royal Air Force at War" it mentions a sortie of a single hurricane over France as the war opened. It was attacked by about half a dozen of these and none of them touched it.

If six of the buggers can't take a single hurc mk1 when they have the advantage, I don't want it in AH2, lmao!

Strange, the first D520s were fully operationnal in April 1940 :aok

Angus,
In fact I don't know any good book on the MS.406 written in english. There  is one good book written in French but I can't remember the name. "Lentäjän Näkökulma II" by Jukka Raunio contains a good chapter on the MS.406 but it's written in Finnish.

kinda reminds me of a cross between a yak and a corsair, since the cockpit is so far back, must have quite the engine.

Probably has the fuel tank between the engine and cockpit like in the F4U.
