Having been here a week, I have a question...

Why does it seem that everyone employed in the service industries (janitors, housekeeping, maids, gardener's, etc.), are Mexican?

I'm a California native. It's not this obvious. Plenty of non-Hispanics cleaning toilets.

Im a California native as well. If they are not hispanics, they probably are Asian. At least the Asians are more likely to be legal citizens.

Mexican is a subset of Hispanic... I should rephrase my first post to Hispanic as I am unsure of their origin.

Really common in Amarillo.

My honest opinon is no one else wants to work that hard for little pay.

Out of my 15 years of living here, I have yet to see a white construction worker.

Well, like California, Texas was settled by Mexicans. The resident population of American hispanics is very high, and the number of legal and illegal Mexicans and Central/South Americans is also high. Depending upon the circles you run in, you will see just as many middle class and wealthy Hispanics as you will see mowing the yard. In short, it is Tejas, what do you expect amigo?

Texas has a VERY large border with Mexico, as does Arizona. Texas has about 5 billion little towns in and around the border. Makes for an attractive entry point I'd bet.

About 500,000 sneak across the southern border each year, and I would guess many are going through Texas.

Chit, Texas has so many small towns and roads connecting them, it's almost sickening.

Sand....because I like you I will educate you like a coworker of mine did once.

Hispanic really means being of hispanic origin....meaning the island of hispanolia (SP) that means you are either puerto rican or domincan republic.

I'm not sure how much truth it holds but he corrects everyone in the shop he hears use that phrase.

On another note...i'm not sure were the term "latino" comes from because my simple mind equates that to Latin....and not to spain or mexico.

Anyhow....mexicans work alot of those jobs in Arizona texas and S cali because they are hard workers and not ashamed to make an honest buck by cleaning a toilet.

If you think about it alot of our immegrent (SP again...sorry i've been drinking) ancestors did alot of the same things. They took the watermelon jobs and worked hard to provide for thier familys.....hopfully their kids did better than them and their kids did better than them and so on

welp that's just my take on it anyways.

Gunslinger, that is not correct. Both the island of Hispaniola and hispanic share the same root-Spanish. Hispanic is of Spanish-American stock, no matter what country in the New World you are talking about.
