"Ace under attack"
« on: July 25, 2004, 02:56:44 PM »
What is the deal with the female voice that pops up and says either "ace under attack" or " base under attack"?  When I hear this I look around, and never see anyone.
Is there a certain distance or parameter in which the game announces this to you? ie, enemy within 1 sector or soemthing like that?
I've been wondering about this for quite a while, but so far the people I've asked didn't know the answers either.

From my experience I'd guess it's anything within the sector...

it is set to give the alert every 10 minutes, if a base is "flashing" on the clipboard.

originally, it would go off every time a new base flash started, which happened to be about once per minute.

the community lashed out, and HTC put some sort of "delay" into the announcement. IIRC ther is a post in the news forum about this somewhere, probably over 1.5 years old.

the original intention was to alert to NOE raids. many times people didn't have their clipboards up, and a base would start flashing. by the time someone noticed, then called out on country channel the base was lost.

kind of a gameplay concession. and in it's concept, i totally agree with it. the only other option is to open your clipboard and look at the whole map every 30 seconds, or rely on someone with no real connection to you, or possibly your "virtual country" to report the attack.

think of it as an AI general, giving your "country" updates on somethign being "attacked"

i think a better solution maybe is to have it call out once for a base flash, only if it is a "new" attack. meaning the base in question has not flashed in the last 30 minutes.

that way the "furball" bases that ebb and flow wont set off the alert all the time, and it would serve it's usefull purpose.
I don't know what to put here yet.

Best solution is to go to setup/sound and turn "base under attack" all the way down or off:D

Hey, I just had an idea...(Whooooooooaaaaa) What if one of the HTC guys recorded "Alert A1," "Alert A2," all the way up to like 150 (What map has over 150 bases? If there is one they can limit it when they put out the terrain editor) And then go on a codin' rampage to set it all up? After the game bugs are fixed, atleast (Boy'll that be awhile).

Example: The Win95 game; SimCopter.  Came with a sort of in-flight radio that had pre-recorded things that went with it.

Sounds folder had:
6 radio stations (One empty; none of the below applies to it )
6-10 songs per station
2-3 DJ thingies per station
80 commercials TOTAL, (randomized ingame) each about 50 secs long

144 misc sounds, average 40kb each (Stuff on dispatch comm, stuff yer guy yells, etc)
114 sounds made by people in the city (NPCs)
97 Game sounds (Copter, crashes, planes, bla bla)
24 custom songs, each about 11 mb

All of them were minimal compression .wav files that sounded unbelievable and the whole sounds folder is only 398 MB, so it obviously wouldn't be a size problem, but I bet HTC won't wanna sit fer years coding that all in. Just a rampaging thought.

re-reading the title of this topic got em thinking...

ACE under attack

what if there was a sound every time someone like fester was being attacked, and his icon got enlarged on the map. LMFAO

or maybe someone carrying 10+ kills, so people could go help them outta a jam.

wow those are some of the dumbest ideas for AH i have ever had.
I don't know what to put here yet.

It looks like all the information you ever needed has been posted above.

Some folks like it, some folks dont. It's kinda nice that you have a choice as to your preferences. Your choices are leave it on or turn it off.

Yeah, so you can't be complete milkrunners sneaking in under dar - we need some kind of warning!  :)  Of course, there is no way of knowing if its someone in a single aircraft - or GV - or a whole mission.....
