UK ISP connection to HT , tests...
« on: February 01, 2000, 04:11:00 AM »
I did a little testing yesterday evening as I was suffering a nice little lag and wanted to make sure of what it was...
Tried 6 different ISP's (there are loads of free ISP's in UK, just subscribe to one and you will have an immediate access...)

I am , personaly on Easynet (not free) 95% of the time, reason is , i have my main email and news account there....and while I pinged HT site (I figured it is at the same location as the server is....) and used a shareware version of Netlab...

Well, I could see my connection going from Swindon to London, then New York (US), then.....it came back to GERMANY (   ???), before going back to the US where HT is located....not verry efficient, I would say...

One of the routers located in New York was getting a latency of no less than 600ms....

I then tried : BT, Free4all, FreeUK, freeserve and Barclay's...

Easynet was the only one comming back to europe before the final connection, and  here are the results...

Easynet : 450 ms (19 nodes)
BT : 380 ms (19 nodes)
FreeUK : 350ms (17 nodes)
freserve : 350 ms (18 nodes)
Free4all : 290ms !!! (12 nodes!!!)

I am sure there are others, you can try them regarding your own location (I know that for example free4all is closer to me as their main Dialup is in Reading)...it is worth testing...I played for 4 hours without a single disco...

Test wee done on a 56/V90 Modem, and I have a connectin up to 33.6 , but that is not ISP related, but BT...

Hope this helps.......

One more thing that might help : make sure that your ISP used PIPEX UUNET gateway to go to the US...(UUNET Backbone...)
