Ala your move on Mr. Black.  Is there a trick?  Some sort of "IP Yellow Pages?"

there are IP lookup services, there is one built into pingplotter.

also some IP's are designated to certain companies.

him being in the business so long i'll bet that if we gave him a class A IP prefix, he could state who owns it LOL.

another "way" is doing a full tracert. doing that gives you the "names" of all the nodes the packet touches en-route to it's destination. those names are usually pretty telling as far as who owns the router.

thats the extent of my knowledge im willing to disclose
I don't know what to put here yet.

It's simple, yet complicated.  There are free IP locators online, but you can only trace the IP back to it's gateway.  For example, I live in Nahant,  but if you use an IP locator it usually shows me as connecting from Cambridge, since that's the gateway I'm using.  It's further complicated when you use dialup, since you can connect using multiple gateways.  Then there's the whole proxy mess, with which I can use an IP that shows me anywhere in the world.

If you get a true IP, though, you can often tracert it to at least the general location it's coming from.

Ok - sorry Im not a techie.  Im just looking for a general location - a state would even be good enough - I dont need a name or an address or anything - just trying to find out where something is based.

Anyone have a link to one of these generic locators?
