From the article:
During one mission in 1945, Gatterdam was supporting a bombing attack against a German oil plant when his engine malfunctioned. He withdrew from the raid, but then returned to the target area upon hearing that his colleagues were under attack. Handicapped by faltering equipment, Gatterdam still managed to shoot down two German fighters, according to contemporary news accounts.

Major Gatterdam, clear skies and fair winds.
Petals floating by,
      Drift through my woman's hand,
             As she remembers me-

Surrounded by suck and underwhelmed with mediocrity.
I'm always right, it just takes some poepl longer to come to that realization than others.
I'm not perfect, but I am closer to it than you are.

"Willy's gone and made another,
Something like it's elder brother-
Wing tips rounded, spinner's bigger.
Unbraced tailplane ends it's figure.
One-O-nine F is it's name-
F is for futile, not for fame."
