An idea for a scenario and a question for the CM's
« on: June 07, 2001, 11:47:00 PM »
The other day, I was reading the book by Tillman, Hellcat.  It got me thinking that a Marianas Turkey Shoot Scenario may be cool.  Before everyone says that it would suck and that the Hellcats would cream the Zekes, listen to what I thought might make the scenario workable.  The key to making this scenario good would be two major things.

First, a good map of the Marianas.  Have airfields on Guam, Saipan and Tinian, with Iwo Jima in the area.

Second, being able to turn the dar off in the planes, but leaving it active in the tower of the CV's, with possibly only sector bar available with dot dar at a reduced range.  This would add a bit of realism to the scenario and the ability for the Japanese to have a fighting chance of getting through to the big ships.  Why?  Because you would need to have fighter directors giving orders to the CAP fighters on where to make their intercept.

This is where my question for the CM's comes in.  Is it possible to set up the dar so it is only visible in the towers?  If not, then this would be kind of a pointless scenario, though the settings used in HS could possibly work.

I am really interested in the PTO and have been for quite some time.  Since we don't have the planeset for the classic CV battles of 1942, this could possibly be the next best thing.  I suppose for this to really be good, we would need an SBD-5 (or a Helldiver, though I would rather have the Dauntless), a Jill, and a Judy.  Oh well, it could be fun.  Anyone like it or think it is practical?

Thanks for entertaining the ramblings of a rabid PTO fan  :)

well mathmann right now you can only set radar for the country and that is regardless wether ou are in-fligh or in the tower.

what we can do is every combination between no dar at all and full dot radar all the time, with or without sector bars.
What we also can do is change the minimum alt for the dar betwen round and 2000 feet as well as dot radar range.

we can't however distinguish between in-flight and on the ground.

However aou could have ground controllers by using the 3rd country with a different radar mode.

as for your first question... that might be in the pipe already   ;)

Great idea Mathman. We already have a Marianas terrain in the works(among many others), and truth be told we were hoping that the Battle of the Phillipines Sea would be the next multi-frame scenario. But the planeset required for this didn't pan out for HTC, so we had to shift gears and adjust our thinking.

Rest assured, you're not the only Pacific war enthusiast here. We'll get to it as soon as the planeset allows.

Duckwing, does that mean the "Tower Only" radar mode is still not working?  It's on the command list, but I know from Operation Lamplight that it was not working as it should.  I thought it was fixed in one of the recent releases.  If not, this really needs to be made a priority IMNSHO.  So many of our scenario and Snapshot write ups are much improved (in the realism department) if we can have tower-only radar with GCI officers. banana, can you ask HT or Pyro next time you talk with them if this is on the "to be fixed" list?  Thanks.

Pyro and I have already talked about this, and it's hard to pin down because it does work sometimes, other times not. We'll probably have to go in the SEA and do some thorough testing to figure out what is causing this to not work correctly everytime. Same goes for the dar not sticking all the time, and the icon irregularities. If you'd be willing to spend some time in the SEA with me testing this out, Sabre, maybe we can figure it out.

I think that is an excellent idea Mathman!  It is too bad that AH is a bit short in the PTO planeset right now, but I figure that will change with time.

We had a snapshot some time ago in the PTO and used the JU-88 to simulate the Betty, and the C.205 to simulate the Tony.  We finally have the Tony, and my guess is that the Betty can't be too far away   :)

Bring on the PTO!

I'd love to see more Pacific Theater stuff. Especially Scenarios!! Midway, Guadalcanal... it'd be great!

We need the F4F, SBD, TBD (maybe) and the Japanese plane set needs filled out. I know there has been a LOT of discussion regarding the Early War Plane Set. I'm sure in time we'll see everything we need to make all this happen!

Also- in the request department- I'd like to see some visual distinctions between the ships. Most of  the Japanese CVs were quite distinctive from their American (& UK) counterparts. Their Capital ships had a different look as well.
