Ver 1.01 Graphics Engine Improvements
« on: March 12, 2000, 07:13:00 PM »
Seems I have about a 10 fps increase BUT!

Now motion is shuddering especially in barrel rolls while firing guns at 44 fps.
Never had the problem before this Version.

Gladly trade back the 10 fps for that smooth motion.

Tried all rez and bits, v-sync on/off all latest drivers formatted HD and fresh install of AH.

A400 128 ram AWE 64 CL Rivatnt 16 mg

Anyone else having the same problem....?
Thx

Yup,

I have the same problem. I have tried everything to get rid of it. It happens in all resolutions and even while the FPS counter reads higher than 60. This problem is so wierd because it is not consistent...sometimes it is barely perceptible and other times...well I can't fly at all (above and beyond my complete lack of skill of course). I have done all the usual things:

1. Eliminated all background programs.
2. Reinstalled AH.
3. Reinstalled video drivers.
4. Defragmented the drive.
5. Cleaned and compacted the registry.
6. Tried a PDPI L4 game port.
7. Setup a fixed swap file.
8. Fixed the VCACHE settings.

The "stuttering" is most apparent whenever the world is being rotated, be it in pitch or roll. It literally freezes the screen for about 0.3s and then accelerates to the proper orientation. It can happen as often as every 45 degrees in a barrel roll (8 times per revolution). It happens in offline and online modes and is independent of gunfire. The problem started with version 1.0.

My system is as follows:

P2 450
128 Mb RAM
ABIT BX6 MB
V3 3000
SB Live
TM Gear w/B. Church's Digital Chips

Any help is much appreciated!

I too have noticed a increase in FPS, it happend about the same time i turned off ground clutter, so its hard to say whether it's just the ground clutter being turned off or not. I have a hunch there is an minor FPS increase.
As for jerky graphics when plane rolls (ie barrel roll) i havent noticed.
What does your frame-rate indicator say? (remember its a time-average so you may want to roll for a dozen times or so - offline)
Also any diff between online and offline?

All i can suggest, maybe try to re-install direct-X to 7A i know 7 had USB probs, it may be that - do you use USB?

Also put the latest video drivers on AFTER you re-install direct-x

It could be your video card aint up to it. Does it happen in lower resolution modes? Colour depths?

You machine sounds more than enuf.

When I switched to Hi Res in Warbirds I had the same stuttering problem.  It turned out to be cause by the little modem icon in the system tray.  If you have a little modem down there you need to remove the icon from the tray.  That was it for me.

Uh, I was thinking to be the only one to have this problem.
I have a PIII600E@800 with a GeForceDDR so I'm sure I have enuff horsepower.
I lost that beautiful smoothness (during rolls) when the new horizon graphic came out.

Xmab,

Do you think the PDPI gameport card helped? Did it speed up the frames?

Same prob here. Tried everything too, except removin modem-icon.

I wonder if that really can be the reason.

Try and if there is a conflict somewhere not readily apparant. Start with the sound card. Disable it in device manager, reboot and then fly. If doesn't do it (I notice a common factor of Creative products here) then maybe think about another sound card? If it does then at you ruled out a sound card - vidcard - Aces High program issue.
For reference I have a PII 333, 192mbsdram, WIN95B, V770 Ultra and a Diamond MX300. None of the problem being reported here.
I only get a brief hit intermitantly when  icons pop up. Not all the time and it's never been much of a problem - except when I did not realise I was heading into a cloud of enemy

Xmab;

I was wondering the same thing, because I was looking at getting one.

I am not so much worried about frame rate as I am concerned about smoothing out my Thrustmaster.  I had heard that this card converts the analog output of the joystick to digital.  Do you find that it helps in this way?

I'm going to give Westy's suggestion a shot as I have also noticed the creative soundcards to be a common thread. Unfortunately, the stuttering occurs in offline mode too when the modem icon is not in the systray.

Not to change the thread, but I figured I'd reply about the PDPI card questions. I have not noticed a frame rate increase between it and the SB Live port. However, it does appear to smooth out analog joysticks somewhat. Furthermore, it completely removes the whole poll with interrupts issue. If you have a TM F22Pro/F16 FLCS and a TQS I HIGHLY recommend Bob Church's replacement chips. You can read about them at http://home.att.net/~stickworks/.  It was the best $60.00 I've ever spent on computer gear.

I ran into this stutter problem when I purchased a new monitor...

I tried a variety of things (unfortunately at the same time) and solved the problem.

One of the things I tried was turning off the modem display.  Another thing I tried was increasing  the refresh rate of my monitor to 85Hz.  I think that's what cured the problem for me.  YMMV.

Thanks!

Unfortunately I have the the "Trackball" style TQS. It is old and so am I.

BTW I'm in the market for a "Eraser Head" style TQS if anyone has one for sale.

I've had the same problem.  Got a PIII 550, 128 MB RAM, and a Voodoo3 2000 video card (16 MB, PCI).  I'll give the modem icon bit a try, and the DirectX re-install.  Thanks.
