These studies have been frequently used as a basis for drawing conclusions about human populations. J.B. Calhoun's work (1962, 1963a, 1963b) is frequently cited in this area; Calhoun's goal was to discover exactly what happens when animals live for long periods in congested, highly-crowded conditions. In his experiments all basic needs were provided for rat populations, thus allowing unlimited population increase. From his work Calhoun was able to conclude that under crowded conditions interaction degenerates into a "behavioral sink": females neglect their babies; males sexually mount unreceptive females, other males and recently weaned young. Heightened aggressiveness occurs with physical attacks of males on other males. The end result was a high mortality rate and a reduction of population size.
