Does anyone have any references or white papers on this topic that would be good for a layman such as myself to get upto speed on?

Don't forget that there is no a lot of networks OSI compliant (IP is missing 2 for example).

Understand tho ... there are only 5 layers in TCP/IP. This is a model to help you understand networking.
