Well I think this fellow is over analyzing a simple problem.

Soccer sucks :)

Why America hates football

To be honest, I am starting to like it a bit more than I used to.

I love football.

But, I preferr the NCAA myself.  The NFL has become all about the money and less about the game anymore.

I just wish the NCAA would have a mini playoff and a superbowl type game to determin the national champs.

watch out for my huskers.....its a rebuilding year but I'm expecting great things  ;)

The writer missed the real reason that football (soccer) is not popular in the US....TV.

Soccer does not convieniently stop for commercial breaks the way that the other US sports do.  This makes it VERY unpopular with the networks and advertisers alike.  So you won't see it on TV with the same regularity as the other big 3 US sports.

The sport also doesn't stand a chance at developing into a fan favourite.  Just look at College football in the US.  It earns more revenue for the Big League schools than anything else.  Soccer hasn't even got the POTENTIAL to earn the same dollars as football or even basketball...so US schools will not promote it in the same way.

It is sad that such a great game is dismissed by Americans....all because of the mighty TV.

Proud Crimson Tide supporter, myself.:D  I've always preferred to watch college football than pro.

edit: Speaking of Huskers, there've sure been some great games over the years between the Tide and the Huskers. I always look forward to those games.:aok

Interesting theory Curval. I believe that there is more to it than that. Even before television, the NFL flourished in the US while soccer remained a minor amature sport.
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.

Football is too similar to basketball?  is the writer on crack?

Football and basketball are therefore the team sports that most vividly evoke a common human fantasy: to leave the ground and fly through the air.

I think the answer is yes.

Something like it's elder brother-
Wing tips rounded, spinner's bigger.
Unbraced tailplane ends it's figure.
One-O-nine F is it's name-
F is for futile, not for fame."

I think you both have good points.  Most kids nowdays have played soccer, but most of us older types never did.  I think older guys are a big part of the TV watching demographic.

Knute Rockne and Babe Ruth both died before TV but football and baseball were well established before Knute and the Babe came to prominence.

Boxing is great for TV, a commercial break each round and yet Boxing has lost appeal from it's height of popularity.  The Louis - Schmeling fights, Tunney, Dempsey, Marciano, all before TV.

Football is the sport of kings,  Basketball is to different from football to even be put in the class.

Baseball players like gladiators? You must have been smoking from the same pipe as the guy who wrote that article.
