Ok im in North Carolina taking care of my dads house

Storms like hell last night.

get home from dinner find both his PC's UPS's beeping

Circut breaker is out , flip switch restart the PC's

sister starts up find but  DAD's nothing!!!! HD lights + powere LED's all com on but doesnt even make it to a post/or bios screen.   at first i grabed a spare monitor to try that still nothing.( it wasnt thru the UPS backup/surge protector)

ASUS P4C800
P4 3.06
1024 DDR333
2 DVD-ROM (one is a burner)
ATI 9700 pro
All on a APC X1000 UPS battary back up/surge protector
with a 21" flat panel sony monitor


OK i've built several PC's  so i start messing with it,
Open it up check all the connections see the CPU is filled with dust and all so i take it out side to the Air compressor and notice the the plug in the garage where it plugs in.

Its black and the face plate is blown off it, not to mention the Out side lighting timers that were plugged into it were blown apart and 1/2 way acrossed the garage!!!!!

so know i know something was hit by lightning or a stong Electrical surge!

upon futher inspection of the PC i notice a piece of the modem (little black plastic cover) in the bottem of the PC, pull the modem and see a little char spot
(key thing modem didnt go thru surge protector)
All other phones work find and so on (he got a very nice phone system set up)


Well back the the PC it self
Next i swap the video card just seeing if thAt doesn any thing
Nothing

get pissed put his back in and fire it up for ****s and Gigs

It starts
so i got into safe mode just to check it out , its fine
reboot loads into Windows normally................Well hell ya its fixed.

Reboot after futher inspection and a little windows updates

WHAAAMMMO

back to nothing


ive been pulling the RAM trying one at a time (yes 1st slot)
swapping the Power supply plugs to see if there one with a short .

Nothing


pulled every thing out except
RAM CPU HD MOBO and VIDEO card


still nothing

if it was hit and fried why would it have all of a suddenly work then quit??


im at a lossss

where should i start looking now?

Replace the PS  swap the MOBO

By the way there are no sound/bios beeps at all!

You can try the power supply swap and see .

take the ram out and try to boot you should get tons of beeps, if not then the mb or cpu most likely failed .

if it beeps then reistall the ram and try again .

(my p-4 when it got powersurged compleatly died mb/cpu bit the dust )

i have a amd machine that i got from a relative that was lighting struck HARD and it still works but its never been stable , it has freq/varience problems and runs for awhile then just falls down and errors out .


i also had a p 3 that did the same thing it booted and worked for about 6 months then finally failed  

I would suggest that you rma the mainboard if ya can , dont give up on the cpu until you test it though .

Roscoroo - thats the route im gonna go basically right now my DAD has an Asus P4PE that he got RMA'ed after already buying the P4C800 so i was gonna buy a new PS try it - if nothing try using the CPU RAM and HD on the P4PE (mobo) if nothing there then ill know!  (CPU or RAM)

As far as the ram goes i pulled one then swapped it out with the other............Nothing will make that thing beep i even booted it with out a video card and no RAM.....Hell at that point i was convinced there wasnt a speaker in the case (but yep it there and hooked up correctly)

i have no other way of testing the CPU and i Know the P4PE is brand spanking new!

the ram might have been fried but the HD seems fine i hooked it up to my Sisters and could read all the DATA.


Like i said the mobo isnt beeping , wont post to anything(but did after it happend 4 times then quit)

either the ps or mainboard bit the dust . it may have zapped bolth of them . but yea id try another ps just to be shure , and the other mainboard . (when my p3 gigabite mb died it didnt beep anymore either . but the cpu was still good (the 933 i gave to Jayclark )

yea i have to agree AMD's seam to hang in there alittle better then pents when it comes to lightin/powersurges/fires/ect .

3 dead pents here , and 1 amd that still works but its unstable .(it may be the combo also, but it was lightning struck so hard it lost a hd  )

well final conclusion after repair ...............MOBO  and PS shot ......... its fixed for now till DAD or Mother nature F's it up again!............................. ................
