I have a question mabe you can answer.

Computer 1:
p3-800 512 ram
I have a security Dongle on my printer port to run a program.
Full version of program.

Computer 2: p2 300
Slow as Sheet
Security dongle on printer port to run LIMITED version of above program.

Problem: program WILL ONLY RUN IN WIN98 or SE version.

Problem: computer 2: also has an ethernet cable to run equipment. Ethernet card is their brand NO others will work. It also is ISA ( old large black slots)
And the ethernet card WILL NOT WORK with VIA chip sets.

So we digitize on computer 1 and put it on floppy and load into computer 2.

Question: anyway I can run a server as a buffer?

I really need to get faster computers, but I am bottlenecked at old hardware.

Any suggestions?

Computer 1 has 1 ISA slot but is Via chipset so I can't use it as Computer 2.

Computer 1 can use a VIA chipset, since it doesn't use the ethernet card.

anyway around this?
would a server recognize the dongle?

Why cant a via chipset run an old nic. Need to know what kind of network card that is and its IRQ (or DMA chan) is. Reserve that IRQ in the MB BIOS for isa slots. If you dont have that option you might be out of luck there. You'll have to reset the IRQ with software or jumpers and keep trying.

Any compter with stanard LPT settings should recognise your security dongle. I assume its just a parallel software key with passover to the printer for standard printing.

It reads the security dongle the ethernet card is called a starlan card it is specificly used for a certain type of computerized embrodery machine. The CARD won't read via chipsets. the card can be changed IRQ and DMA channels. The card is the gobetween the computer and 2 embroidery machines.

I use computer 1 for artwork AND to digitize, the Digitizing software only runs in win98. I can get a faster computer thats not a problem. Also win98se won't recognize more ram ( atleast this one won't) I have 3 Gigs of ram I'm not using. I need a faster CPU and more ram for the art programs but my bottleneck is the digitizing software.

So IF I have to buy or build a seperate comp just for the digitizing, I was wondering IF i just built a server. Would that fix my problems. I don't really want to section off the HD to read dual versions of windows.

Unlikely to work with win98. Card is very old.

card works in Win98, just it's an old ISA slot AND it won't work with a VIA chipset. Finding a MoBo that doesn't have a Via chipset, can handle a big CPU, AND have an ISA slot is almost impossible. Therefor my Q to Skuzzy IF I put the dongle on a server inbetween a fast computer to used for graphics and the digitizing program would be feasable.

We just passed 1 Mil in equipment and other business related stuff, hardly a loser:)

If It wasn't for people like me, Skuzzy would not have gotten his Nickname, I've been using the card he helped develope since it was introduced. The only difference is, He was still in puberty back then:) And probably 50 LBS. lighter.

You can drop the "Tude" since you have no idea what I do Or what my question was about. That 64k has bought me a 1/4 mil house in the burbs, 3- 65 GTO's 2 retail stores ( I own) 2- 2 bedroom apts ( I own) a 24 foot century, and all the other toys. I am a happy camper, you obviously are not self employed or own a business, well knowing you need to spend money to make money.

The question addressed to Skuzzy was quite simple, If he doesn't want to answer he won't, but please don't answer for him.

Couldn't you update that digitizing software?

Server won't help you much, if you can't get running 2 ethernet adapters in the same machine (assuming that embroidery machine has to be directly connected to ISA ethernet card and that win98 doesn't support more than one adapter).

Why don't ya try buying cheap 4 port switch and plug it between your embroidery machine and computer #2.

If it works, just plug computer #1 into switch as well and share data (of course, you'll have to configure home network)

The company decided to go into a different direction and build single head machines that have everything ( software,hardware built into the machine) I'm trying to find a way to upgrade the computer CPU while still staying in the perameters of what the old hardware needs.

The security dongles are attached into the printer port, thats what opens up the program. Now I have 3 options...
1: buy a better computer and partition the HD to read win98 and XP. This would seam the easiest way out. But I really don't want to do this.
2: buy another computer and use 1 fast one for graphics and one for the digitizing. I'd rather have 1 computer on my desk than 2.
3: Since buying another computer looks like my only way out, I was wondering if a server with the Dongle plugged into it would be able to read the program in my other computer or If a computer could read a program from a server. I have win NT for a server, but really have no experience in this department. Thats why I was asking Skuzzy, maybe he could answer the server question.
