Terrain for next version
« on: March 15, 2000, 02:09:00 PM »
Hi,
I set up an account a few weeks back to try out AH again since the beta which did not impress me at all but since then IMHO Aces High has matured so well so fast..well it just seems to good to be true

Anyway's apart from me getting closer and closer to closing my four year old Warbirds account what I wondered is that in the next terrain for the next version with tanks what kind of obstacles will we have for tanks. I think the current terrain is a bit featureless for tanks and if the next terrain is similar then this will lead to tanks just having a boring one-route 'A-B' appraoch when driving from point to point, right now planes have a choice when down low to zip through valleys etc so I wondered ifthere will be large forests for tanks to navigate and give the tank commander a choice of path to the desired target? this would not need 100's of polygons for individual trees but maybe use the approach used by the Razorworks team in Apache-Havoc and have a polygon 'slab' textured to look like a dense forest (and the quality of the AH textures so far would not make this such a hard thing to do   ) this way you could have narrow forest pathways and maybe help tanks hid in amongst these narrow pathways so they would not feel so vunerable and make themselves Typhoon fodder

Well thats enough from me for now, just the ramblings of an increasingly restless longtime Warbirds fan.

If thats the case Ripsnort we might be getting a desert terrain.  No trees to be modeled and the AH tank is painted in desert camo.

Hans.

That is not desert camo. It is panzer yellow. That is the base shade for all panzers from mid 43 on. BUT..it would be nice to force the spits to have azure blue bellys.....

Hey Rip... if you think that people are going to be impressed about driving around a featureless map just so as they can present themselves as Typhoon fodder then please think again. That will happen once and then nobody will bother driving the vehicles and AH combat will vere off back into the stratosphere again. Please use a few braincells

HTC have to make it meaningfull to people to want to drive those vehicles and you have to give them features on the ground that they can potentially use to hide from marauding ground attack aircraft and those features that make a vehicle v vehicle confrontation interesting and plausible from an armored warfare tactical point of view. If you don't then all that will happen is that the tank guys will just feel that they are there as targets for aircraft and nobody will drive them. Sort of defeats the object of introducing them in the first place if thats all you want them for. I hope that doesn't happen.

Regards

Daren

Question: If there are no icons for ground vehicles, how will you know whether that tank in front of you is a good one or a bad one?
