August 12 1898 Spanish-American War::

    In Washington DC, representatives of the US and Spain sign an armistace ending the war. Spain agrees to free Cuba and to cede Puerto Rico and Guam to the US. The negotiation of a difinative treaty is scheduled to begin in Paris in October

Meanwhile in the Carribean:

     The port of Manzanillo, Cuba is sshelled and captured by a squadron consisting of the cruiser NEWARK, the auxiliary cruisers, HIST and SUWANEE, the captured gunboat ALVARADO, and the armed tug OSCEOLA. Only afterward is it learned that the war is over.
