But in Tehran, the Iranian National Olympic Committee said in a statement: "This is a general policy of our country to refrain from competing against athletes of the Zionist regime and Arash Miresmaeili has observed this policy."

babek whats the locals take on this? before crucifying this guy think about his mindset. hes competing for iran think about current religous govt of iran what if he loses?

agreed hawklore.  Olympics are about sport and competition.  Not about polotics and religious ideals.  

One would think a muslim would love the opertunity to defeat a jew.  Arenty they supposed to fight the zionists on all fronts.

History has shown that the competition does wonders for deflating radical Ideals (see hitler) so maybe they know that a defeat in this is a defeat to islam itself.

you misunderstand. what im saying is the way govt of iran is right now this guy might be killed or imprisoned if he lost to israeli. he might find it hard to compete under such threat.

thats taking it to far imo.... i seriously doubt they would do anything fysical to him if he lost.

no need to ban him or anyone else.  just enforce a blanket rule that doesn't even specifically have to even mention this incident.  

  your schedule of competition is set by the Olympic committee, if you don't show for a scheduled event they mark it as a loss.  no Astrix explaining why, or footnotes on the champions win, not as a forfeit, just a simple loss.  score it, move on and ignore it.

the bigger deal you make of it the more publicity it gets.  I'd imagine that making some sort of statement is the point behind this stunt anyway.  complete disinterest is the best way to fight that sort of thing.

Right on, capt. apathy and GScholz -- if someone doesn't compete it's a forfeit and a loss; on with the games for those who do compete.  

On the other hand, don't all nations wanting to participate in the Olympics certify as part of their entry that they agree to compete against ALL nations in the games or else they will not be accepted into the Olympics?

I wasn't aware that any major athletic event allowed participants to choose who they would or would not compete against.
