Mis-use of "BUFF"s
« on: August 19, 2004, 11:15:34 PM »
This is like the "There's no such thing as RPMs" post.

Most peeps use "buffs" as a generic bomber term. WRONG

If taken literally it refers to Big Ugly Fat "effers" (not gonna spell it out).

Traditionally it refers ONLY to the B-17, an ungainly bird. Before AH1 days I had *only* ever heard it used for the B-52 (which is another ungainly bird, as well), but recently (perhaps the influx of newbies? Hell, I don't know why! I'm just reporting it!) people have been calling Ju88s and all level bombers "buffs".

THIS IS WRONG! Most of the bombers are NOT big, NOT ugly, and are rather graceful.

The term BUFF only applies to B-17s! Deal!

... Silly mortals... When will they ever learn... :rofl

The term Buff has always been ubiquitous  with any level bomber in AH.  As with so many other names in the game, its the short names that stick.

Maybe its just a matter of preference, or "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" but I dont find the B-17 to be a big fat ugly bird.  I find it to be graceful and revel in its nostalgic value.  Always has been and always will be one of, if not the most, favorite bird for me.   I will most assuredly sign on to any mission that will muster large formations of B-17s.  what a plane!

PS:  I actually had the chance on two seperate occasions, once in Hondo, Texas the other in El Centro, California to pay $5.00 to climb aboard and through a B-17 at airshows.  What an experience.  Have photos from all different angles.  I need to find those somewhere and post em here.

Bombers of all types  only look pretty and graceful to me when they are in flames with a wing or two missing and headed downward at a great rate of speed.

Up untill that point as far as Im concerned they are all "Buffs":D

B17 Ugly?  You looking for a fight?

B52 is the only real Buff.  And thats what the airforce boys call it.  And it is a big ugly fat 'fellow' (Thats the clean version they use on t.v.)

If anything in Ah is a Buff, its the Lanc.

Anyhow, the term is applied loosely in this game regardless.  No one ever called a B17 a buff until AH...

People are just too lazy or illiterate to say "Heavy Bomber"

Actually, if you read "The Wild Blue" by Stephen Ambrose, the B-24 pilots quoted in that book swear up and down (at least how I took it) that the name was given specifically for the B24... since it is indeed butt ugly =)  Now even though I think the Liberator is a better bomber than the 17, I think the 17 is by far more aesthetically pleasing.  :aok

Folks in Air Warrior were calling all bombers Buffs when I got there in '93. I think it is (and pretty always much has been in games) a generic term for any bomber. I have no idea when the term started in RL.

B17s are not ugly, they are beautiful!  :p  I've always loved them since I first started flying them in AW about 6 years ago.

I took these at a Fly-in  at the Suphur Springs, Tx Municipal Airport I attended. Not great quality, but pics just the same.

Nice Picks ther Jackal, I am still looking for my shots, I have them on disk somewhere but since I made my last move I havent had the oppotunity to find them.  Ill have to ask the wife, she knows where everything is.

By the way, I read once that the B-24 was the thing they used to ship the B-17 over to England in.:)

Was just about to chip in...B-52 is the one and only BUFF. nickname didn't even exist in WW2. B-17 was "flying fortress".
