Figured I'd give AH a go again and cant get it to start. Game CTDs seconds after i click the icon.

Athlon XP 3200+ (400 fsb)
Win XP Home
512 MB DDR PC2700
Radeon 8500 64 Megs (yes i know..it sucks)
Latest ATI/Direct X/Sound drivers

Any ideas?

This one worked for me.

Delete the contents of the cache folder in AH2 directory.

It's kind of a pain because you'll get the long pre load bar as it replaces all the graphics but it might help you out.

I had to do this right after patch 7 to get things running right.

Hope it works for you too.

Rename your current folder, and just unzip this into it's place.

Be warned... the game resolution is set at 1280x1024. If your monitor won't handle that, you'll need to open the Video8.cfg file with Notepad and change the settings to whatever your monitor can run.
