Strange occurrence last night ...
« on: March 18, 2000, 07:41:00 PM »
I can't remember the name of the pilot I supposedly shot last night, Amdahl or something? (sorry :O)

However, the point of this post is, that I didn't fire a single shot! I was flying the F4U-1C ... and going high to perform a hammerhead, when I noticed a stream of tracer from my side view ....

"Oh great" I thought, some prettythanghole has stolen my fun .. (notice I didn't say kill .. as I didn't like my chances against the Spit!) ... when the next second, I get the Victory message in the buffer.

Someone else said it could have been a manouver kill, but that doesn't explain the tracer.

It could of course have been from the bandit, but the angle and direction seemed wrong ....

I'll keep observing.

Otherwise, its a ton'o'fun.

Cheers

I would say the other guy damaged your target enough to cause lethal damage, but the other guy died before the target plane.  When the target died, the credit was given to you as you were the only living plane nearby from another side.
Maneuver kills are happening, you got the credit. Sometimes ya get lucky.

Hmm, I got a theory....

SNORKI is starting going vertical and about to do a hammerhead.
Meanwhile a spitfire (piloted by this Amdahl) is also zooming up in pursuit of SNORKI. Maybe he is about to being roped, maybe he could have made the shot. Who knows.

The development of this situation is spotted by a, at this time, unknown plane and its pilot, who is on same side of SNORKI. He quickly buzz in on the spit shooting wildly (his tracers being seen by SNORKI from the side view), and getting some hits in. Unfortunately for him he is on collision course with the spit and is killed on impact.
The spit may never have noticed this because he suffers from target fixation and just about ready to open fire, but suddenly is ripped out of his boresight at the sound of hits. He tries to evade but it is impossible and he explode (hmm, the attacker must have been a F4UC1).
Collisions are a much faster way of die tho and so the F4 pilot is dead before the spit (who didn't even feel the collsion, but possible got the kill). Instants later the Spit pilot dies close to SNORKI and he is thus awarded a manouver kill. The F4 don't get it as he is dead.

What do you guys say. A possibility?

Is it possible the spit broke its wings off pulling up too hard?  Just before it hit the ground, maybe it fired a few rounds out of desperation.  Just another possibility.

(I saw a p51 do this last night to one of my teammates, and without firing a shot my teammate got the kill.  The p51 just pulled up too hard and broke off both wings.)

Yes, I think Bloom might be right  .

As a matter of fact, there's been a few times where I've done nearly exaclty the same thing .. spraying madly in the hope I might get a stray shot ... usually while incapacitated in some major way.

Hehe ... thanks for the responses ... I should sleep easier now  .
