Ground vehicles will change everything - well, a lot of things
« on: January 20, 2000, 12:55:00 PM »
I started this on another thread, but thought it was good enough to open up on its own.

Ground vehicles.  If they can be used to capture fields, ground vehicles will open a whole new era in online WWII flight sims.

Think about it.  So far, we know HTC are planning on bringing in a jeep, tank and an AA-vehicle.  The AA-vehicle will not only be used against aircraft, but more easily, against paratroopers.  Thus, the paradrop will become a very risky venture for field capture.

A jeep will carry the troops needed to capture an enemy HQ.  But the defensive ack would murder them, as would they the AA-vehicle.

Hence, the need for a tank.  Only a tank could withstand 20/37/40mm ack, while the main cannon would make short work of the defensive emplacements.

These three vehicles used as a team could independently take a field without air support even, given everything being equal.  In fact, they would become the prime method for field capture.  And this would make them the prime targets.

It probably will be safe to suppose that icons for vehicles will be very restricted, requiring that one be within, say, 1000m.  Thus, it might be a good idea to have opposing ground vehicles, mainly tanks, ready to engage them, as well as spot them for aircraft.  Any aircraft wishing to engage enemy ground vehicles will have to come down to the deck at some point, which sends any defending aircraft down as well.  Thus, air combat at low altitude will become a common occurance with ground vehicles.

That's not to say that high altitude, strategic bombing will become obsolete, not at all.  Strategic bombing will remain the crippler of an enemy country, but low-medium level tactical air will suddenly become equally as important to support, or prevent the capture of airfields.

Hopefully the "grages" would be 2-3 km from the field  or even random 2-3 km from field so that spawning would not be as big an issue as it is with fighters

Correct me if I'm wrong (HT) but HT stated that although vehicles will be in the game, they will not be part of the strat in the game.

The terrain has hills. Tanks can't see over hills. The Fw189 Das Fliegende Auge can. We are getting the Fw189 next. This talk of the P-38 was all a clever trick, due to their "similar" appearance.

LOL!

I'm all for ground vehicles; then planes like the Il-2 and Stuka will have a purpose.

I would never "fly" a tank, but I wouldn't mind busting a few.

Wouldn't mind taking a Typhoon low on a 4x20mm pass on a locomotive.

Jeeps? No prob!

Here's an idea, (half-formed, so comment at will) Have forward emplacements that have to be supplied, aka.drunk dropped to reach combat levels, when combat level is reached
base spawns 3-4 tanks 2 jeeps and Fpnzr that head for nearest enemy base. This would give a light dose of Tac air (stopping incoming armor) and Strat ( multiple c47 heading for forward bases in major offensive)
Let me know what ya think (if ya have a real comment, that is, leave the seal-clubbing internet abuse off this one plz)

I think the distances involved in driving and ease with with any jack-ass with 1000lb'er will destroy any tank will discourage such adventures.

The solution would be creating an AI controled group around players task - force. Player drives 1 tank and get 3 tanks with him, 4 AA trucks and 4 jeeps and can jump from one to the other anytime... ?

I'll drive one, but getting 12 people to join you will be a hussle..

Wow,, shades of "Rat Patrol"...

hehe would be cool to have seveal jeeps with mounted .50's cresting the ridge at speed, and opening up on all the poor C-47's lined up to supply forward bases.......

Really, ripsnort?  Hmm.  That would be too bad.  If a paradrop is the only method of field capture, then flakpanzers may turn the process into a slow, congested slugfest.  Even a single flakpanzer parked next to the maproom will require the sending of several C-47s just to ensure some percentage of success.
