Can't shoot worth poop!!
« on: August 22, 2004, 11:52:00 PM »
In the last few months I've gotten better with ACM and flying in general (still have a LOT to learn!!). But I can't shoot. Or rather I can't hit. I chase the drones around and get D200 from them canons blazing and I only get one or two hits! Last night I actually flew past a plane while shooting a continuous stream of useless lightweight lead! Any ideas to get this shooting thing down? It is now frustrating to stay alive! Because I can't hit anything when I AM alive. Thanks.
Peace

You seem to have the in-close shooting thing down.  The key to good aim is to shoot when closer rather than farther.  The next thing you should do is mess with your convergence settings a bit; try putting all of the guns to the same convergence at about 200 to 250 yards.  You'll probably find that this helps substantially with killing folks at those distances.  Finally, try turning off your tracers if you haven't already.  With tracers on, folks tend to "walk" the tracers to the target rather than actually aiming at the enemy.  This can seriously hinder killing ability and hit percentage.

Set your guns at 400, then remember where the bullet stream will be hitting at lesser and greater distances.

At 200 it will be higher than the pipper at 600 it will be lower so aim accordingly.

Fire short bursts and change your point of aim till you hit the target.

Fly a P51 till you get it right - good guns, decent amount of ammo and you can evade nme a/c fairly easily.

The drones are a good start - fly in the same direction as them and kill them, then land, rearm and fly in the opposit direction and try to kill them. Try to tag them from the side, top  and bottom till you get the hang of it.

Then practice for a couple of years till it's second nature. In five years or so you could be pretty good.

tracers off will utterly and completely make your accuracy go to nill.... for a time... :)

Levi's right once you start getting hits without tracers you start to learn what the sight picture looks like, and where you have to put your pipper in a given situation to score hits.   Turning tracers off frustrated me to no end for several days before I started seeing results, and I'm a better shot now because of it (better being a relative term)  :)

It doesent sound like your "locking up" your target. In most arenas you can hit tab & a box will form around target with an X aiming point. aim at the X. In FFA, first hit cont.tab to enable you to lock onto targets on the same team.
    hope this helps

Come see me in the TA.

There are a few things I can help you with to get back on track.

The biggest single mistake most people make is overcorrecting when they are trying to adjust course & shoot at the same time.

Give me a yell we'll set up a time to meet.

This doesn't work in the main arena or the CT where the "big dogs" play. Its a learning tool that can be turned on in H2H arenas, training arenas and off-line.

Are you having a problem with your plane "bouncing" around as
you try to fine-tune for your shot?  I had this problem and corrected it with scaling the joystick properly.

Had the same problem, was walking the tracers to target. Makes it hard to hit and burns alot of ammo. Turning off tracers helped me alot.

Be sure and practice leading your shot too.  If you are shooting in a turn remember to shoot ahead of the target.  Lot of math involved.  Also, to save ammo, fire short bursts instead of a stead stream.

YES! i find myself bouncing around a target all the time. I have tried stick scaling on a "small scale" but nothing real serious. Maybe it's time
Thanks

THANK YOU ALL! :aok I really appreciate all the answers. After seeing a film  of leviathan flying a spit and killing a dozen or so nme's I realized I needed help! I will meet you in the TA Ghosth. Although when I go in it is usually pretty empty. If we can't connect I WILL e-mail you.I turned of tracers from the start. They seemd to be a hinderance. As for all the other suggestions-thanks. I've also fallen in like with the yak. But it runs out of ammo in about 10 seconds and Then I'm truly dead. I will try the P-51. I could use the extra thousand rounds of ammo. :)
Peace

Looks like both fixing that nose bounce, learning to stabilse when your shooting, and learning to control your trigger finger till you have a GOOD shot are whats needed.

Email me, we'll find a time to get together.

Another thing that I found myself doing, and I do fall back into this habit when I'm having a bad night and really anxious for the kill is I'm over controlling right as I"m about to fire,  I get excited and those calm  deliberate inputs on the joystick become more and more exagerated and I end up missing everthing.   I know getting that kill can be really exciting but I always fly better when I'm more or less in neutral in my mind.  Attentive yes, but not over eager.   Kinda like target shooting if you've ever done that.  Control the breathing, smooth pull on the trigger, don't jerk it.  You won't take it that far since this is just a video game but I think the concept is similar.
