I think that's what it's called.

I see all the pilots coming into the school with these little walkie-talkie looking things.

I should have one too, right?

Alright, I guess this is used to listen to airplanes, ATC, and can be used as a backup radio if the one in your airplane goes out...right?

Any other reasons to own one?

What model do you recommend for a moron with limited funds?

I have an ICOM A22 which is nice. It has a VOR reciever too. But by today's standards it is a pretty old design. Newer ones are much smaller.

One thing about handhelds is they use Nicad batteries. They lose charge even when you don't use them, so you pretty much have to recharge them every week. When the battery on my ICOM finally croaked I looked around for a replacement and ended up getting a Ni-MH battery, and I'll never go back to Nicad. It was only $70, plus another $60 for a quick charger. The thing goes forever without a charge. I highly recommend them to anyone who has a hand-held with a lame Nicad.

Maycom AR-108 is popular here. It's the cheapest one and works reasonably well.

Yaesu Aviator Pilot here. Works like a charm. It may be a little overkill if you are only looking for a transceiver (this one has VOR + CDI), but it's great for its price.
