Where Is That Vsynch Switch?
« on: August 25, 2004, 11:32:07 AM »
Where is the vsynch switch and how do I turn it on and off?

I've looked at vsynch threads here but all seem to stop just short of the actual details of where the vsynch switch is.

I've seen my vsynch switch before, am 99% sure I followed previous advice and did not turn it off, but out of curiosity would like to look at it again to be sure.

Is it among hidden or setup or installation files?  Can't find it in Windows, monitor, NVidia, or any other system or diagnostic program.

Gotta be right in front of me.  So, step by step, where is it?

(Utterly perplexed in yet another area where I've seen the thing before, figured could get back to it if I ever needed to, and now cannot find the dang thing.)

Display Properties-->Settings-->Advanced-->Your Nvidia Card Tab;
Performance & Quality Settings-->Vertical Sync;

Possible settings:
Application Controlled/Off/On

Thanks, 2bighorn.  This is not the vsynch on/off option I vaguely remember from somewhere in the past, but there is a check in the box before vertical synch meaning it is application controlled.

Therefore, I presume my vsynch is on and I can live happily ever after.

In case this may help others, I must admit some of my befuddlement was due to not looking at the leftside popout box of the NVidia card tab -- the box looked like incidental info of the previous screen instead of being part of new information.

Halo - I'm definitively NOT the guy to ask, but I was intrigued by your comments and the answers you got about vsynch.

As you stated, yes there is a check box saying that vsync is 'application controlled' where you were led to.  I went to the same place, confirmed it and left it at that & went to other subjects.
But, this bug did not leave me alone, so I went back to the screen and oh surprise, in mine there was a 'slider bar' which turns on when you click the above mentioned off at the bottom.

Interesting slider, because it says 'off' on the left side and 'on' on the right.
btw, I'm very curious as to what a 1/4 off and 3/4 on position could possibly mean - it IS a slider ... but I assume further investigation may clarify that. Who knows, maybe even here - the largest treasure trove of hardware I've ever found.:rofl

For what it's worth, maybe you have the same option to try out. I'm doing it as of now.  If something strange happens, I'll let you know. If not,  I'll try to figure out that 'on-off' slider.:D

uhhhhh ... mmmmmnnnn ... dunno, Taxi, I'm certainly no computer expert either ... I'm content to leave most of those settings at application controlled, especially the vert synch ... if in doubt, and your computer's running fine, I'd stick with application controlled.

Well, I tried it out.

Effect - undetectable to my perceptive capabilities, so I'll leave it 'on' for the time being.  If something happens, I'll let you know.

I have always been told that off=rubber bullets, and I have enough trouble hitting anything so I leave it ON.  Also, what good do you think it does to render frames faster than your monitor can display them?

Halo - change the setting from application preference to ON (Direct 3D) - but this is for ATI card users :-)

This will get you set

I set the switch to On but didn't see much difference.  If anything, Aces High frame rates seemed to be a little slower.  Main test was ack, and again planes flew right over and through the ack bullets with no damage except eventually an occasional assist.

The ack impotence seems to be a separate issue.  Aces High II seems to demand putting the pistol against the belly before firing, so at least I may live a little longer as my lethality turns laughable.

Since Application Controlled was the default after setup with my NVidia card, I guess I'll leave it there unless Skuzzy and majority find On is best for Aces High (good corollary question: How does Aces High handle this option of Application Controlled?).
