I installed a gig, for Forgotten battles mostly. Less jerking and loading, but I wouldn't say the difference is huge especially in AH.

At the way games run now on my A64 and the way they ran on my XP2600 I wouldn't have had anything less than a gig of RAM. I started with 512MB but quickly saw the error in judgement with the 512 using the old CPU. Then made the upgrade. Not to mention a short while later jumping to the A64 CPU with a gig of RAM also.

go with 2 sticks of 512. your mobo can run memory in single or dual channel mode. 2 sticks of matched memory will run faster than 1. if you fill all the slots it will run in single channel mode.

Not always so.  I have a 512 + two 256s running in dual channel mode.

512 will be enough for any game that loads less than that amount. For any game that want to load more you will see a performance and/or quality hit with only 512.

Going from 1 GB to 3 GB will likely result in a slightly slower system overall.  Loading all memory banks with 1 GB modules will certainly force a 2T command rate (and possibly other memory timings to be set more conservatively) and decrease available memory bandwidth.  (I'm also ignoring the fact that a 1 GB memory stick is extremely expensive.)
