The term BUFF only applies to B-17s! Deal!

... Silly mortals... When will they ever learn... :rofl

Well the first time I ever remember reading the term it refered to the B-52.  Beauty being in the eye of the beholder I would suggest that the B-17 is one of the finest looking bombers of WWII.  Only the B-26 and A-20 being cleaner looking. (to me)

However maybe we could use the German terms for bombers which was used in WWII (vice BUFF).

Most people who use the term BUFFS don't know what it really means.

They use it for bombers, no matter which one.

And the previous posts are right, the term BUFF came around to refer to the B52, that's it.

As far as what to call a buff in aces high, I think it's ok to call any bomber a buff since the term is used to refer to a bomber and not the look of an aircraft. If the latter were the case then I have a strong object to the B17 being called a buff.

Yeah, I know. And for those that said in AH1 that "buff" meant any heavy bomber, well never ONCE in AH1 did I hear it used for anything other than the B17. I can't comment on incorrect use of the word in WB or AW, as I never flew them. But a wrong tradition is still wrong.

It is a pet peeve of mine that people use this term for any bomber. It's stupid. Maybe I can see it for the b17... MAYBE.. But I agree with others that it can be aesthetically pleasing.

But to use it for Ju88s? Lancasters? Ki67s? Hell no. Sorry, you folks are just wrong and/or uninformed to use it for all bombers.

And that, as they say, is that. And by "that" I mean "my pet peeve". So to quote a certain hand puppet from "The Tick"

"You're making us look bad! I told you, READ A BOOK!!"  :p

After posting the pics of the 17 I remembered how hilarious one event was. They had a drawing of tickets and the people chosen got to take a ride in one of the planes there. For the 17, I believe 8 or 10 people got to go up.
I had 2 of my grandkids with me. (2 of Deth1`s daughters). We were standing pretty close to the 17 after the people got boarded and they started prefilght. The 1st engine whirred and fired off and was humming like a kitten. When they started to turn the 2nd engine over it turned over about twice, then BWHAAAAM, she backfired. I mean it was was LOUD. Dakota and Daytona came off the ground what seemed like two feet and stuck like monkies to my legs with their feet still off the ground. Their eyes were about the size of dinner plates.:D

Good for you JPEG.  I did have the chance to fly in one when I first got stationed in El Centro, California with the Border Patrol.  I believe the flight would have taken place in the Palm Springs area.  The cost was $400.00.  I was on trainee status and had just paid to move my family out there from Texas.  I really wanted to do it but felt I couldnt afford it at the time.  I really regret not doing it.  I have been watching for schedules that might bring one near my area and am still hoping for the opportunity.

Or almost as bad as people calling flak "puffy ack", and ack (short for ack-ack) "flak."  Hint: ack is rapid-fire, e.g. "wife-ack." :D
