Got a new guy into AH2 and hes asking all the usual questions about why hes getting wasted.

Finding it difficult to explain everything to him in detail without writing a novel.

Does anyone have a link to a website that explains ACM - and has pictures?

Thanks.

Saurduakar if he's serious about staying with the game he could look at purchasing some books.  One I'd recommend is Fighter Combat: Tactics and Maneuvering by Robert L. Shaw.

For the newbie I'd suggest a book just out written by Crutch from the 56th fighter group over a WB.

It's geared towards the new flyer. Crutch is as old as dirt, been an instructor near that long. Good guy, excellant stick.

Highly recommended for the n00bie.

Get him in a good squad and let him fly with some of the top pilots, most decent squads will help him out. Pigs take on noobs quite often and so far after a few weeks with them, we are rarely dissapointed.

if he doesn't have one already, tell him to get a flight stick that has independent rudder controllers.  twist sticks are dead meat.

or, even a stick that has a separate controller for the rudder besides a twist stick.

i just bought a Thrustmaster Top Gun Afterburner 2 (rudder control on the attached throttle).  i was amazed at how much better my control is during a turnfight w/out that damn twist stick messing up my coordination.

All I ever had was a twist stick and don't think I was ever considered dead or easy meat. :)

Training.

Get him into the training arena and dog fight him.

Set up different situations where he is supposed to do different things. Tell him what he is supposed to achive. Let him try to accomplish it. Tell him why he failed.

Example on good training sitatuions.

1. He getting on your tail and staying there.

Let him get on it and then go evasive and  he has to try to follow.

2. You getting on his tail.

Get on his tail and he has to evade you. This is very good training as it not only teaches him evasivness but also teaches him to look backwards and fly.

3. Getting on the tail of an evasive target.

In 1 you let him get on your tail. This time make it harder by flying like if you where in a fight. Pretend to ignore him but move around alot. Let him come in from high and try to get glude on your tail.

This is important as it teaches him to anticipate and time his aproaches.

4. Head on evasion.

He as a noob wount have the aim to win a head on. So teach him how to avoid one.

You start high he starts lower (this is the situation that is hard to avoid). What he should do here is to aim his plane below one side of your nose. Do a barrel roll and just as you are close to him turn it into a split s.

This way he is very hard for you to hit as you pull -g´s and is moving around alot.

Ending it with the split s allows him to instantly get on your tail.

Doing these 4 training sessions will teach him alot of basics. If done in one plane he will get the feeling of that plane how it behaves in different situations. He will learn the first steps of sitation awarness and evasivness.

Imho the key to learning how to get kills is to first learn how to survive. After all the longer you live the bigger chance of you getting a kill.

Also imho hands on practice in a contained enviroment is always the best way to learn. Because even though the reading on netaces.org is great for a totally new guy its just jibrish as they dont know what the text is speakin about.

After these lessons he should start studying http://www.netaces.org

Gixer, Shane & 2shad4u -

:)  Yea, many people are able to adjust to the twist stick and do well with it.  And, good for you if you're one of them.  However, I hope that you would admit that it *IS* more difficult to hold a coordinated turn when your rudder input is tied in with the yoke.

When I first started combat sims 7 or 8 years ago, twist sticks were the newer thing and that's all that was available.  Finally, just yesterday, I purchased an Afterburner II with the rudder input separate from the yoke, and I immediately could feel a difference when holding a coordinated turn.

If Saurdaukar's friend is new to simming, & he's looking for every advantage that he can get, I still stand by my suggestion to get a stick that has independent rudder input (or, pedals a la B17Skull).
