Win XP SP2 Problem?
« on: August 31, 2004, 10:44:46 PM »
After installing SP2 for Xp, exiting game results in a windows error message.  I tried the 'debug' option, but system hung.  I am unable to provide any detail beyond that... This has happened each time I have shut down AH2.

I will continue to attempt to get good debug data for you.

What did the error message say?

Try Event Viewer from Administrative Tools. It's a log of application events good, bad and ugly. May give you some useful info.

Service Pack 2...

Service Pack 2 is hosed anyways.

LOTs of security craters as it is.  Search for problems with SP2 on the web. You will see what I mean. M$ Pulled it from their update website citing "Overwhelming demand".

Best off without it for now.

Dan.

Here is a Slashdot Article that Gives all the skinny on why you should remove SP2.

Slashdot to the Rescue

Excerpt without the URLS to the references:

Posted by michael on Friday September 03, @06:51PM
from the we-can-only-hope dept.
thejoelpatrol writes "So did Slashdotters call this one? Windows XP SP2 seems not to be so secure after all. A Register reporter goes in depth to find out just how safe a fresh install is. He provides a list of which dangerous ports are left open and which services are left on by default. I guess now we know why Microsoft's security timetable is 10 years." Reader ack154 writes "ZDNet is reporting that many Dell Inspiron users are reporting an extreme performance decrease since installing Windows XP SP2 - decreases as much as from 2.6ghz down to 300mhz. Dell claims no responsibility, claiming it is 'externally loaded software' and they don't support it. In the mean time there has been a fix posted on Dell's forums, which rolls back the processor driver." Finally, Marxist Hacker 42 writes "Amid complaints of too much XP Service Pack 2 coverage on ZD Net, David Berlind writes that Service Pack 2 deserved the scrutiny it got- and charges that it failed to live up to Gates' Trusted Computing Initiative." Finally, Microsoft warns that installing SP2 on a spyware-infested PC is a bad idea.

KurtVW,
I found a thread on the Lock-On forum where someone had your problem when exiting LOMAC but gameplay was fine. Unfortunately, I didn't see a solution.

2Hawks,
TY for the info.  It was interesting reading.  I already had the problem services disabled and still do manual updates on everything.  I use Sygate and the hardware firewall in my router, so I also have the Windows firewall disabled.  I have had zero issues, performance or otherwise with SP2.  Of course with all the stuff I have disabled, I am not sure what benefit I get from it either. I am going to leave it installed.

Windows XP SP2 CD
« Reply #9 on: September 04, 2004, 09:02:34 PM »
I've had nothing but trouble since installation of the SP2, my ISP
got screwed up, wasn't able to logon & access the internet.  Cer-
tain files were dropped ... don't know where ... Hardly able to lo-gon to adjust stk.cfg in offline mode.

The last straw was when Outlook Express 6 wiped out ALL of my
data w/accounts that my wife & I had :(      Tried System Restore
but was unable to restore to 08/30/2004, as a new month began
& only 09/01/04 & 09/03/04 had restore points created.

To wit it took me 1 1/2 days to straighten this mess out, I got rid
of the SP2 CD & am thankful that my system works just fine w/o
it w/my own safeguards, anti-virus pgm, zone alarm & pop-up
blocker, what a relief.
:aok

Cheers,

Happy1  :D

Happy1,
That is why I frequently make Restore Points - just in case.  I am the only one who uses my puter, so I don't have accounts.  I also don't use Internt Explorer or Outlook Express.  Sorry you have had so many problems with it, but at least you are back to where you started again.

Hi DAVENRINO  :)

Thx much for ur kind words I really appreciate that.  Now then
would u b so kind as to tell me HOW u create the Restore Points as the last time that I was able to Create Restore Points at leisure was when I had Windows ME.

Windows XP doesn't have or doesn't allow u to go back a few days & create a restore point as it dates it the day u create it...
par example I wanted to create early today, 09/04/04, a restore
point dtd 08/30/04, but when I ran it, it was dated today :(
thereby nothing was accomplished.

Yes I finally managed to fix the problem & it's nice to have everything working well & be able to fly again, for the time being
I can do w/o SP2.

Regards,

Happy1 :D

Hey, No Offense..

Could y'all take your anti-microsoft crusade somewhere else?  I'm really just trying to get a bug worked out here.

Ok, so you don't like SP2, well, its working fine here except AH2...

I don't want a poster child topic here... I just want HT to know I've got a problem... K?  Thanks.

My  point wasn't to bash MS as much as point out that SP2 is likely your problem.

Like it or not, it could be the case. No Bashing,  No Evading, just the honest possibility that is highly probable.

I've had no problems with SP2. None whatsoever.
