My FX53 finally shipped
« on: September 01, 2004, 07:51:58 AM »
If you want one of these you'd better get in line! I had the CPU on backorder with 4 vendors who all claimed they were getting a shipment in "within the next 2 days". Three weeks later I just got a notice from "zipzoomfly" that it had shipped and cancelled the other orders.

MOTHERBOARD
MSI K8T NEO2-FIR

CPU
AMD Athlon 64 FX-53 Socket 939

RAM
2X Corsair VS512MB400 512MB DDR400 PC3200 CAS2.5

VIDEO
Gonna have to tough it out with my 9800-Pro 128 for now, the bank is busted.

I am hoping to have it all this week so I can install XP=64 and get airborne this weekend :D

Edbert -  setup a dual boot system.
Use your usual OS along with XP64.

NewEgg has a nice site and a good reputation but I got the MB/RAM/CPU for about what NewEgg wants without RAM, and there was free 2nd day shipping to boot :D

First question is why? This machine is pretty much used just for gaming. Why will I want/need the 32bit version available?

Second question, how? I've never dual-booted two versions of Windows before, only between Windows and Linux. How will the registries be handled, say by AH? Wouldn;t it need to be installed twice into two different directories? Should each OS have its own partition?

zipzoomfly is another online vendor. Try http://www.zipzoomfly.com ; I have never gotten anything from them so I don't know about reputation and other things like that.

OK now I am going to sound like a dumb arse here but what exactly is the difference in a Socket 939 A64 when all the FX53's I have looked at say Socket 940. The difference in price is staggering to say the least.

I think Kev said there aren't any good ATI 64 bit drivers, yet. There are likely other drivers isssues ,as well.   I have never done dual-boot but it sounds pretty easy - just search for instructions. I would make 2 partitions and install your current OS on the first one.  You should get a choice during boot of which OS to load.  Kev will prolly chime in with more specific info.

The 940 pin CPU needs registered memory and actually benchmarks slower than the 939.

64bit video driver write-up:

Dual booting is pretty easy between disparate OSes, but I can see all sorts of oddities with dual booting Windows unless thay are under different partitions and all the apps get installed twice (once on each partition). I was sort of wondering if there was a big need for that or if there was an easier way is all.

Dual booting much easier if you have Powerquests Bootmagic.

You setup a small FAT32 partition for bootmagic, and 2 x NTFS partitions for OS's and whatever other partitions you require.

1) Install your non XP64 OS first.
2) Once installed format the small partition as FAT32, the other OS partition as NTFS
3) Install bootmagic to the FAT32 partition.
4) Configure bootmagic to not display the FAT32 partition and add the second (XP64) NTFS partition. Reboot.
5) On reboot select the 2nd partition (empty XP64 one), it will say that there is no OS installed and ask you to reboot.
6) Insert XP64 CDROM and reboot.
7) Choose 2nd NTFS partition again but this time when prompted select to boot from CDROM.
8) IMPORTANT - When installing make sure you choose the correct partition to install to. Also when given option select to "leave the current file system intact" . If you reformat Bootmagic can't find it anymore.

Dual boot using Windows itself -
Install non XP64 OS first.
Install XP64 OS next.
You may find that non XP64 OS looks like it not accessable.
In which case modify boot.ini file of the XP64 OS to include the non XP64 partition info.

Apps -
Dead easy, but ensure drive letters are the same.
If you wanted AH2 from both OS's install AH2 from one OS.
Reboot
Select other OS from boot menu.
Goto the AH2 directory and delete it.
Reinstall to same location under new OS.
That way both OS have neccessary registry info.

Works for any App you want to install.

Drivers - ATI's one is still beta for XP64
Mobo should come with all neccessary 64 bit drivers.

Cool, seems easy enough, but what is the reason for keeping XP32 around again? Both Nvidia and ATI driver support seems good.

I got tracking numbers, it will all be here tomorrow :D
