Gun Zoom
« on: February 12, 2001, 03:21:00 PM »
Why is it there?

I am not sure if some airplanes had some kind of Zoom capebility in the sight (like a little binocular or something) but I am sure the Pilots didn't have a Helmet that could zoom in a 100% or more in a full all aroound view.
If the Zoom is there to make up for Small screens that make it harder to see then in real life it s just weird, the icons MORE then make up for that.
The Zoom is one of the reasons people actually get kills from 1k, they Zoom in, precission shoot and get a kill (tried it my self a few hours ago and it sucks).

So, why is it there?

Go ahead and flame me if you feal in a bad mood

It's NOT a fake, gamey telescopic zoom. When using the Z key you're able to "zoom" (verb, not adjective) to take any particular view your using and bring it to a normal field of view.  Hence the lay-term "zoom."  Objects seen when the fov is brought to a normal pov perspective become larger to the size they would be.

"The view system supports a zoom mode that allows you to change your field of view.  In default mode, things appear small because you've got a 90 degree field of view placed on a fairly small monitor surface.  Pyro"

(seeker!      hit the Z key and then use the [ and ] keys and you'll see what the 'zoom' feature does)

What Westy is trying to say is:
When you use maximum zoom in AH you are seeing things the size they are supposed to be.
When you are using the regular view, everything is 1/3 of the real-life size.
So the realism does not suffer.

As for the gameplay, since yoy give up a lot of SA (Situational Awareness) when zoomed in (you see everything 3 times bigger then default, but the area you see is 9 times smaller), it does not really give an unfair advantage to anyone.

Is that why full-zoomed in kills look more like real guncam footage?

Coolest thing in the world to see is tracers flying past a bandit and throwing up dirt around him at fullzoom.

I have often wished there was a way to turn off all the views except gun zoom, in H2H. SA would be a real art

I don't know about anyone else, but I find it very difficult to track and shoot a target with "zoom" on unless I am in a buff. Doesn't help me a bit in a fighter.

Zoom is fantastic in this game. I don't know if HTC planned this, but if you actually scan the surface using zoom (Quite time consuming to scan the entire horizon) a fleet will be visible long before it's visible in normal view. Pretty cool to see the faint outline of a fleet on the horizon after a 15 minute hunt

I use it a lot.
It is realistic as it simulates the pilot FOCUSING on a single direction.

It is not realistic at all. But it is a great design decision and I think it adds a lot to gameplay. That is one of the few realism compromises I really apreciate a lot.

How come it (Zoom) isn't realistic if it gives you exactly the same picture (sizewise) that you would see from a real aircraft? It's the regular view that is not realistic because it shows everything 3 times smaller (if you sit 1 feet from 21" display, that is).
