What's the best Sim for Realism? I fly them all.
« on: September 06, 2004, 11:02:15 AM »
Gents;
Need your help.  You guys by definition are the part of the AH community that supposedly likes to play as realistically as possible.  I say this in spite of the fact that I'm totally aware that there are different factions within our ranks.  In any case, I'm putting together a detailed review of what "I" consider to be the 3 most realistic sims around and wanting to be fair as possible I'm asking that you guys let me know of anything I may have missed or anything I should include in same.  Please check out what I have so far and let me know by the email link on my site at

P.S. When I become rich and famous I'll surely give you credit for anything you may contribute but I'll keep the money, ok? :lol

Looks good so far Beeg. When I have more time I will dig into your evals further and see if I can help you out having played all three recently.

Define realism.

In my view:

IL-2 offers the most realistic setting. But it flies really wierd.

WWII-OL offers the most realistic action; but everything acts really wierd.

AH offers the most realistic flight model; but the arena's really wierd.

take your pick.

Thanks;
Believe me this is a legitimate effort to look at these sims from only one perspective.  Realistic Re-Enactment which is the kind of flying I like to do.  The opinion of someone else who's flown all three would be very valuable and appreciated.

Beeg,  il2 should be on that list.  it is the only sim with a ToD type play.  you can play offline in career mode and rise through ranks and get different planes.

Skull and Seeker;

I'm trying to put together a legitimate review (hope to get it published) and my niche is "Big Online" sims.  IL-2 is well supported and believe me the guys in the other sims also brought this up, but it doesn't fit my niche.

Thanks

OK, let me have a go at this.  Realism is something that feeds my fantasy of being a WW2 pilot.  If I wanted to pursue this to the nines, I would sell all my toys and go back to RL flying but that scares me today so I'll settle for spending some odd $50 a month to daydream in these sims.  I'm looking at each of the features in my review "individually" and applying a 0-10 rating on how each makes "me" feel  You need to know who the "Me" is and that's somebody who likes to fancy himself a re-enactor.  My review will not be seen the same way by anyone who doesn't feel the same.
Thanks for the input

Il2 is very decent graphics wise, but Oleg has a habit of porking any plane / faction he doesn't like and buffing any plane / faction he does like.

I'd say AH beats IL2 in all categories except graphics.  AH, however, has a main arena where anyone can fly any plane that they want.  This arena dominates the CT where there are realistic setups.

el wrong laser.

il beats AH in rank system.  offline missions.  has way more planes.  Also not the mention the AI puts up better fights than players in the MA 99% of the time.

I don't "re-enact." Re-enactment is portraying an historical battle for the public that has the same result as the actual battle had. Or does it's best to portray it as so.

I had a friend who was a Civil War re-enactor who switched to Union from Confederate because there were more Confederate re-enactors than Union at all the battles (which was seldom the case in the actual battles). When he got "shot" he got dragged over a hill and "healed" by the Company "cleric" so he could quickly reinforce the lines.

I participate in a simulation that has historical setups that can have results that are different from history (and often does).

Yeah ... I know ... arguing semantics. ;)

i play IL2:FB.  I see the AI doing impossible moves - pretty much stopping mid air on some occasions without use of flaps/gear, massive soviet biasing (coming from a non luftweenie no less)  and who can deny the flame throwers all the planes have for guns?  Ever done aerobatics in the heinkel? done high speed dives in it?

great game tho, im just picking out the bad points.
I am not ashamed to confess that I am ignorant of what I do not know.

Better ranking system and offline missions without a doubt. However the planes are purely different variants for the most part.

Hmmmm purely questionable here since the AI routinely pulls completely perfect BFM/ACM while a human flying a computer generated aircraft isn't going to do that even 50% of the time.

I have been playing IL-2 since the day it came out.

Okeydokey!  Looks like I need a frontal lobotomy.  I should have been more explicit in the subject.  "All" means the 3 major online flight sims e.g. AH2, WarBirds2004 and WW2OL.  Though it's evidently great it totally excludes IL-2 or any other boxed sim that can be played online in limited numbers.
