The World Series
« on: September 09, 2004, 08:08:14 AM »
I just had a conversation with a British guy who works in our office.  We were talking about the "World Cup" of Hockey which is currently being played.

I said "At least it really is a World Cup" and not a World Series full of teams from the US and a couple from Canada".

He then mentioned something interesting and if true I am willing to eat crow for any criticism I have levelled at the US for being arrogant and calling the baseball championship the World Series.

Apparently the original "sponsor" of the Championship was a newspaper called "The World".  THAT is why it is called the World Series.  The name just simply was never changed.

Can someone confirm this?  If so can you also provide me with an image of a crow and I will use it as my avatar for a week.

When the World Series started there were only two professional baseball leagues in the entire world.  They played each other for what could only be called the world championship or professional baseball.  Only a Jamaican-loving limey wannabe would confuse promotional hype with national arrogance.

lol...

Okay...so two teams playing a newly invented game had the arrogance to call it the World Series, or was it the newspaper sponsorship thing?

If the latter I will eat crow...if not you are a bunch of arrogant yanks.:p
