One mans last action before he died onboard a USN carrier in the Pacific Theater?

Heck I have no idea but that is one outstanding camera shot.

A bomb hitting the USS Enterprise I belive during the actions around Guadacanal. It did kill the photographer, as I recall.

There was a move to save the Enterprise after WW2, but it ended up at the breakers in the end. Very sad loss of history.

Japanese Bomb Strike hitting the USS Enterprise on August 24, 1942. Photo taken by PhoM3/c Robert Frederick Read. The picture cost the photographer his life, and the camera was destroyed. Film was saved.

It is one of the most extraordinary pictures of WW2. If you look to the lower left you can see a sailor directing a 20mm in the gun tub just feet from the blast. An "after" picture would give an idea what happened to him. He is below the blast line...

I remember my reaction the first time I saw that photo was reading The First Team: Guadalcanal Campaign I think it was. Which I would heavily recommend to anyone interested in the first year of the war in the Pacific, THe First Team & The First Team: Guadalcanal by John Lundstrom.

TY Frank, I was very impresed by this picture as well Reschke prety much nailed my initial impreshions on the head.

Lundstrums book, though I have not read it, but I have debated aganst several quotes from it would not seam to be one of the best sources on the subject, though not a bad one by any means, the Aurthure and I traded E mail a while back on some the subject mater I had issue over and he was very kind in taking the time and admited to not looking into some issues to thourghly.

Specificaly the load out on Vals during this and other campagines, the image above is of a low order detonation, and the damage from this impact compred to the others would seam to indicate that was a 60KG bomb as aposed tot he 250KG bombs that hit the ship elsewhear.

slightly OT: how did you go about getting his email brady? I've been looking for some squadron history on VF-5 and it's been a little tough going. I was hoping to email him to see if there were any good public and electronic resources that I could look into.

The year was 1943, two sailors aboard the U.S.S Enterprise are enjoying the beautiful morning air, when all of the sudden the silence is broken by one sailor turning to the other and uttering these memorable words: "Hey Bob, pull my finger". Just then the cameraman snaps this famous photograph only seconds later to be killed by the shockwave.

Richard Frank's heavily researched and documented Guadalcanal makes the point that the photographer was killed in the forward gun tub, which can be seen at upper left already destroyed. This detonation, often blamed for the photographer's death, was still impressive but did not apparently kill the photographer as often captioned.

This is the tub where Read may have been killed.

Soulyss: He Emialed me in response to a post I made, regarding a queary I had made, concerning a quote from his book in refernace to Val Bombloads in action aganst enemy Ships in the Early war perioud. This all took place in another forum,Soooo In shot He Emialed me.
