Acceptable latency/ping time
« on: February 14, 2001, 09:23:00 PM »
My cable operator is not that good.  I quit playing last october because of that.

What kind of ping/latency times you guys consider 'acceptable'?

It's now 05:28 here, and the average ping to www.hitechcreations.com  seems to be about 190 ms.  Good or bad?  The main delay seems to be between UK and US, though, nothing my ISP operator can fix.

I do not want to annoy anyone by using a jumpy superplane.  Of course I could always use tanks or artillery (...hmm did that last year, actually)

190ms is not bad at all. Most of the local cable users here get about 70-80ms, and we're within 350 miles of HTC (don't know exactly). On dialup I get anything from 170-300, but I am currently using a very poor modem. There is a forum for help on this issue (Internet Connectivity). Good luck!

i seem to remember that like 900 or so is the max the game will allow, but may be wrong . 190ms is a great ping for a analog modem. but check the settup/connection tab in game . if there is not a pretty flat line you will see warps and hate life.

About 340ms ping is the best Fly Weather what I can get at this moment with 56k modem from Hungary.

My internet operator says that bigest problem is my phoneline. Local phone company give a toejam to my complain.

I find out that best flying time is normaly after 22.00 CET. For some reason I get lately very poor ping times like: Beta a. 1000ms and Al: a. 550ms.

Now I need fly early morning (04.00-06.00 CET) to get that 350ms ping.

Hey you FINNISH fellows!
What kind connections and ping times you have up there in KYLMÄ POHJOLA!!!

400 + here in Australia.  I THINK the long lag times have an effect wrt field ack, but cannot be absolutely certain.

I've seen guys with low, low ping times strafe fields in ways I would never attempt.  In fact, most of my ack deaths come AFTER the particular ack has been killed on my FE.

But for air-to-air, 400 or so is no problem, so long as I remember to add about 60 degrees to my opponent's angles.

I get between 80ms-100ms on ADSL, from the east coast USA.

Back when I was on 56k modem, it was typically double that.

I would consider 190ms pretty good, as long as you have no packet loss.

Oh Lord, someone at my cable company must have finally heard my prayers

For those who know nothing of Australian routing, lets just say that it seems my ISP has finally started routing traffic through the new Southern Cross Cable network, direct to LA.

Result?  My average ping times to HTC have dropped from around 400ms, to about 230 ms with zero packet loss.

Happy am I

180-200ms here, kymp.net 0.7Mbit cable..

90% of my connection problems are due to sprintlink being jammed in states.. Getting 1000ms pings on bad days =/

As long as the packets stay in europe ping times stay within 80ms but leap overseas causes it to jump to 180..

200ms ping time is not a problem for online games if it stays constant. Most of the warps are caused from microjamming along the route, some can cause 1000ms delaying temporarily...

All you need is one kiddie smurfing the hell out of a network node somewhere on the way and your game is over =) Isn't internet wonderful??
