According to Beet1e's source, it was the date of the last battle of the War of 1812, not including the Battle of New Orleans, whatever that means.

So Americans have reason to celebrate and mourn on the 11th day of September every year. We mourn the loss of our regained cofidence that we were immune from the evils that the rest of the world had been experiencing for 3 decades, and the loss of life in an attack never before seen on our soil. And we can celebrate the defeat of an evil tyrranical country that wished to enslave us and make us a colony again.

I think it's unfair to blame me for upsetting people in this thread. That's like saying that "fog causes car accidents", when there's been a major highway pile up in conditions of low visibility. Actually some people DO say that - nothing to do with the fact that they failed to adjust their speed to the conditions...

Maybe my original thread title was somewhat high profile. I didn't see that this would be a problem. I thought that anyone who did trouble to look at my post would see that it was about a European issue, and simply move on.

I will say that in hindsight, if I knew so many people were going to take umbrage, I might have chosen a different title, like the one skuzzy used as a substitute.

But I don't feel that on a BBS, even one so US-centric as this, that people should be barred from noting dates of historical importance in one country, just because the date coincided with a disaster somewhere else.
