car stereo problems
« on: September 15, 2004, 04:11:15 PM »
friend got a new stereo in his car.. he didnt re-wire the speakers, but he did get a new wiring harness.

He gets noise coming through the speakers when he accelerates.  It happens when he idles too, but it does not happen all the time.. it gets louder when he accelerates.

I told him that something probably wasnt grounded right, but I really don't know much about stereo stuff.

Car is a 1994 Mustang GT, stereo is Pioneer (don't know the model #).

Any idea what the problem is?

improper or insufficent ground, also, possibly the "remote" wire not hooked up properly.

the "remote" is what tells the power antenna to go up / down, or amp to go on / off with the head unit.

ground most likely call, usually there is a thin black in the harness for the factory head, but it is also grounded to the chassis which the pioneer brobably is not. he probably did not mount the back support (pain in the arse and most dont do it) made of the bendable metal with the holes in it. that thing also helps the ground.

BTW the sound you are hearing is interference from the alternator. google that and there are also "filters" you can buy.

lastly, in an aftermarket head unit, it is best to use fresh power and grounds not the harnesses.
I don't know what to put here yet.

Sounds like interference from the alternator, he should be able to get a inline filter to eliminate the problem.

Never mind...too slow on the post..read above..

He is hearing engine noise from an improper ground. Make sure it is grounded to bare metal on the chassis.

At least your friend isn't overwhelmed by the sudden odor of gasoline.

The place that installed my stereo told me how they messed up and, while securing the sub in some guy's trunk, drilled a hole right down through the gas tank.

I was considering doing the stereo install myself, but (other than what I said), those guys are pros and after spending a grand on the components, a hundred bucks or so to do it right was sure worth it.
