This is mostly going to be an update and refreshment of a thread that Halo originally posted. I will be copying and pasting chunks of Halo's text.
Here is the problem is brief:
For example, if you fly a B-17 one mission and a Ki-67 the next, when the bandits come you'll be scrambling for gunners as follows:
B-17: 2 ball, 3 top, 4 tail, 5 chin, 6 left, 7 right
Ki-67: 2 nose, 3 top, 4 left, 5 right, 6 tail
Except for the ball turret, the B-17G and Ki-67 have largely similar gun configurations but they are organized completely differently. This greatly hinders the effective defense of the bomber for somebody who flies a variety of bombers.
This inconsistency is present throughout the bomber set in AH.
Others (my comments in parentheses) are:
Ju-88: 2 left rear, 3 right rear, 4 ventral
Lanc: 2 nose, 3 top, 4 tail
TBM: 2 turret (say rear), 3 ventral
SBD: 2 turret (say rear, and it's not a turret, is it?)
D3A: 2 turret (say rear, and it's not a turret, is it)
IL-2: 2 tail (say rear)
Boston III: 2 top (say rear)
A-20G: 2 top (say rear)
Here is Halo's suggestion, edited slightly by me. Italics are aircraft not yet in AH listed as examples of future additions:
H8K2: 2 tail, 3 top, 4 nose, 5 left, 6 right, 7 ventral B-17G: 2 tail, 3 top, 4 nose, 5 left, 6 right, 7 ballB-24J: 2 tail, 3 top, 4 nose, 5 left, 6 right, 7 ballHe111H: 2 ventral rear, 3 dorsal, 4 nose, 5 left, 6 right, 7 ventral frontHe177A: 2 tail, 3 top, 4 ventral front, 5 top barbette, 6 ventral rear, 7 noseB-26B: 2 tail, 3 top, 4 nose, 5 left, 6 right (latter two are ventral) Ki-67: 2 tail, 3 top, 4 nose, 5 left, 6 right G4M2: 2 tail, 3 top, 4 nose, 5 left, 6 right Ju188A: 2 ventral, 3 top, 4 nose, 5 dorsalWellington: 2 tail, 3 nose, 4 left, 5 rightLanc: 2 tail, 3 top, 4 nose B-29A: 2 tail, 3 rear turrets, 4 front turretsJu88A: 2 ventral, 3 left top, 4 right topHamden: 2 ventral, 3 top, 4 noseTBM-3: 2 ventral, 3 top Pe-2FT: 2 ventral, 3 topSBD-5: 2 rear IL-2 3M: 2 rear D3A1: 2 rear Boston: 2 rear A-20G: 2 rear B5N2: 2 rearBf110C: 2 rearBf110G: 2 rearJu87D: 2 rearThis would allow for much more consistent position movement while defending bombers. There are, inevitably, some inconsistencies due to the varried gun arrangments on WWII bombers. The Wellington's lack of a top turret, yet having waist guns is one example. The He177A-5's 20mm cannon in the ventral front position and 7.92mm gun in the nose could both be seen as nose guns and I ordered it so that the more useful 20mm gun would occupy the normal "nose" position on the keyboard.
Something very like this, if not this exactly, would be useful for when the bombers are redone.
