Trees are not bunkers
« on: September 22, 2004, 03:35:02 AM »
Whats up with the indestructable trees, where GV can hide safe from all heavy fire and bombs?

One would think that a 1000lbs bomb could prenetate even the densest leaves on the trees?

Or can we get these super leaves on the panzers in stead of the armor ? :rofl

Hey Stone, .  I was in an M8 last night and run in the trees after being spoted by a 110.  He made about 6 passes dropping bombs and strafing.   All hit close but nothing actually hit me.  He must have felt the same way.  My point is, how do you know it was not a near miss?

I do not think I am the only one that has noticed that in this game "the wood is mightier than the ping."

Trees definately help protect you from bombs, I was under some trees in an Osti the other night, even had a Lanc try and bomb me with no success. I toasted about 6 planes trying to get low to straff me, was good for me, but I am sure they were frustrated. They brought a tiger out to me to finally kill me. To me though, the GV icon should be off to nme planes as they are to nme gvs. I would never had been spotted if it wasn't for my big red icon calling out to the nme planes saying "Hey I am under these trees"

You don't mean our painted stainless steel trees?

I love having a Lanc drop 42,000 pounds of bombs and never ping the GV.

Why is it you can have 2 panzers with trees in between, they can shoot through and knock out your turret but your shells explode on the trees? and:mad:

Depends on the tree. Saplings and any younger trees would be snapped like twigs by any of these vehicles. Anything a foot or more in diameter would be a problem to an M8, though the others, with a good clip, should atleast push them over.

Something full grown? If you somehow manage to push it over, you'd likely get your tank stuck 'high centered', and the M8 would end up in the same shape as a beer-can that came to know the business end of your boot (Translation: Squish'd real good)

As for aces high's trees? I can understand them stopping HE rounds (wood would be hard enough to trigger the round), and smaller AP rounds should get imbedded. Large caliber AP rounds, though, should blast through, with a suitable loss to total hitting power as the wood slows the round down.

Bombs are a different animal. They have those spinny fuse-thingies in the nose that blow the bomb up when they stop (usually happens when the hit the ground or something).
If they actually hit a tree, boom. Falling through the canopy? Possible boom (leaves stopping the prop). Should the trees stop the blast when it goes off? Watch any Vietnam war footage of bombs dropping into the foliage, really neat effects those tree's have in visualizing, but not actually STOPPING the shockwaves.
