Try uninstalling Windows XP SP2 update, it will revert back to SP1.

I uninstalled SP2 because after less than 15 minutes of flight in FS2004, the game began loading so much when looking around that it was unplayable.

SP2 is totally bugged and comes with mystical new features like "Data Execution Prevention DEP", which cannot be turned off, but you have to exclude program by program from this "protection".

This feature caused initially my computer to lock up within minutes of boot without any notice where the error might be. I stumbled upon this setting in "System/Advanced/DEP" page, excluded winamp and explorer.exe. Now my computer is still usable again, but randomly i get very strange lockups and lagginess. Before SP2 XP was rock solid.

Windows all together seems bugged..  today I spent most of the time fixing windows after changing motherboard and CPU.
Lots of the time has been spent trying to get the drivers corrected and patched. (windows update still thinks I have some of the updates when I dont)

Had to do a repair install on windows to get it to work (didn't work even in safe mode, since it loaded all the unnecessary files :D)

Also had to reinstall RTW (puuuh..), because the graphics were bugging and apparently it installed some files important for drawing the graphics correctly - which were overwritten by the windows repair.

uninstalling SP2 as I type this. Hopefully that cures the crap that has plagued my system.

To answer Gixer (I think it was him) I am running at 1280x1024 on my 17" NEC LCD  1712 monitor.

Geeeeeeeeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzzzzzz z I just looked at this old MS "ergonomic" keyboard I have here and realized that I am going to have to swap this one out for the Logitec MX Duo my mother in law left here when she moved to Florida..

Romans, Julli

Unless you unlock the other factions via editior you won't be able to play them until you complete the first Imperial Campaign as a Roman faction.

Best way is to go through the Prologue then complete a short campaign as Julli and go on from there. Julli are easier imho then the other Roman factions as they only really have the Gauls to worry about.

Enjoy.

Yep and I just lost the first campaign last night because I took Gaius Julius south against the Greek Cities and didn't go slap the Gauls early on. I had a diplomat in the extreme southern Greek City and they had just agreed to become a Protectorate. But this was after Gaius Julius had died while marching to the extreme southern Greek City in Italy. Then I receive a Senate Mission to blockade a Thracian port up north and I defeat a massive Thracian army (~500 troops to my 283 Hastatis, Velites, Equites and Principes) with my heir to the house of Julii. Immediately after the battle I get attacked by a 1000+ member Gaul army. The reason I got attacked it because I ignored those flippin Gauls up north.

SO tonight I start again before moving tomorrow. Its going to be great.

Just took Rome.

They asked for the suicide of my third faction leader in a row.  Enough of that, I said, and brought justice to the Senate at the tip of a spear!  Take that you SPQR types!

Fighting a four front war though... my military upkeep per 6 months is like 90K.  Stalled in northern Germania, holding in Greece, advancing in Italy and advancing across the Mediteranian.

PS:  Praetorian Cohorts  = ubersoldaten.

Had troops building up in my capital for transport to Iberia when the senate asked for the suicide of my leader. So I invaded and exterminated the populace(needed $)

all of western europe , british isles, carthage, medit. islands, southern greece, most of italy are under my iron fist. 14 more to go until I win.

I could handle the first demand of suicide, my faction leader was late 60's, and his heir was a brilliant commander but when they immediately demanded his suicide, it was on like donkey kong!

After the break out of civil war, I captured most of the Italian mainland, Rome, and managed to force a ceasefire, and renegotiate another subsequent alliance from the other two Roman factions. During the civil war my Spanish possesions all revolted, and overthrew my weak garrisions after I sent my occupying Legion to reinforce my Greek cities after they fell under threat. My Jerusalum garrison has defeated never ending assaults from the Egyptians, and I'm hoping to send the victorious Briton/Gaul armies which just completed the conquest of Germania/Briton south to take Numidia and Egypt.

Sounds like my spaniards...  below 100% in couple of towns and dropping.
Without civil war and with bunch of older units of my armies garrisoning the towns.

I don't like the fact that a couple of my cities seem to be bottomless pits of money-loss, I can't figure out how to make em gain money. But most of my cities make a little money, so I don't lose money over all.

This is because the upkeep costs of your armies are divided among all of your cities according to population levels. For example, a very small town may contribute only about 1% of the overall upkeep cost, while a large city like Rome may have to pay 10~20% of the whole upkeep cost.

You will notice that the income for that city actually rises when you create units, while the income of the cities nearby drops; this is because by creating a unit you are conscripting from its population, so as the population drops a bit, its share of the total upkeep cost also drops a bit.

At the same time, the dropped amount of upkeep share from that city(plus, the new upkeep for the units you've created), is distributed among the other cities, since the relative differences in population dropped.

So its not really something to worry about. Having a city that goes minus income just means its a large city that spends more resources than produces, and having a city that earns big money simply means its a small town that produces more than it spends. If the treasury remains positive, no problems at all.

The battles are great and the new 3D units good to watch, but I can't help but think that everything moves a bit too fast especially compared to MTW's batles. One thing that's good to see is how effective archers are. MTW I never use to bother with them other then Lonbows. Archers in RTW are awsome.

Some people hate the new speedy element, but I myself love it.

The following is all my personal opinion, but..

MTW was way too slow. The multiplayer battles of MTW was "form a battle line, send archers, go grab a cup of coffee". You could just leisurely watch the enemy trying to do something, and then think out a plan and go block their move.

So in MTW, it was usually a matter of who formed a better formation, and who had better archers. A stagnant fight between long range units would come first, and then the period of "long silence". Usually the guy who breaks his ground and starts to attack first would lose.

However, in RTW its balanced out to the middle point - everything is faster. Cavalry is fast and powerful. A slip of a concentration and the enemy player will start flanking you. Unless you react just as quickly, or have a better plan than his, fighting passively in MTW will make you lose.

The keyword of RTW is "initiative" - you need to grab it first, react to things more quickly, and makes the enemy do what you want him to do, instead of waiting for him to make a move and then matching it.
